windscreen scratch
Discussion
Ian,
I have the same issue, but from the driver's side blade. Two scratches about two inches long, most probably from the plastic 'feet' on the blade. I've not had time to have a serious go yet, but plan to use something called Micromesh polishing cloths. One of their original uses was for polishing scratches out on aircraft windshields, but they're now more commonly used in scale modelling for polishing out overspray in paint finishes. See www.sisweb.com/micromesh/
A set can be purchased from a number of sources, one I've bought from being Hannants (www.hannants.co.uk/search/?FULL=ALCLADPC) for 8.99GBP plus postage. These are very fine grit, so depending on how deep the scratch is you might need to start with some 1200 grit wet n'dry first and then progressively move up in grade. Sure folks will suggest other options, but this is a starter for ten.

Won't most car insurance policies cover screen repair, stone chips and scratches etc without any effect on your NCD or renewal costs? Somebody like Autoglass would be much better at taking out scratches than trying a DIY polish IMHO....
Worth a look at your policy documents before you attack the scratch with a potentailly abrasive polish

Just come across your post as for scratches take it to a valeter they usually have a glass compound it will need a buffer doing it by hand will take for ever but if you do it by hand use a piece of cork rather than a cloth it helps it cut in rather than absorb it. As for screen going white it is delaminating so will possibly crack at some point and need replacing. As for a stone chip if your fully comp it will be done FOC but scratches don't come under this if you have it replaced you will have to pay either £50 or £60 xs but it doesn't affect you NCD providing your fully comp.
