The spoiler on my 1999 C4 failed at the weekend. It is now stuck in the down position and doesn't raise automatically at 75mph or with the manual override button. Both operations result in the dash warning light coming on, and staying on until I turn the ignition off.

Can anyone shed any light on what could have gone wrong? I checked the fuse and that seems fine. I don't know what to check next and need some advice before contacting my local dealer (last resort!)

Thanks, Paul

I had the same problem on my previous 993. It was found that the micro switch on the spoiler had failed and needed replacing. Cant remeber the cost but Cardiff OPC replaced which could have been agreat deal of money as #i would have remembered!

looks like you need to either A: take it to a specialist and get it fixed, OR

buy my gemballa GT Coupe spoiler and make your car look like no other

ram air intakes, top of the range 996 spoiler from gemballa and not the hideous new designs they have.

Does that spoiler give any more room in the engine compartment?

Gary - My car is the same colour as yours so I am happy to take the spoiler off your hands to free up more room in your house/garage. I'm sure it is becoming a nuisance being in the way. I am more than happy to pay as much as £50 to help you out. I may even consider paying extra for postage unless you are up near Liverpool soon.

Your in anticipation

You may have one of two faults, as already mentioned the microswitches in the mechanism can fail, leaving the spoiler u/s,

More likely, the 'up' relay is faulty - the spoiler mech. has two relays, one for up, one for down, they're under the carpet section behind the rear seats on the n/s support plate, lift the carpet and raise the plate - you'll need a 10mm spanner / socket - then operate the spoiler, the relays should click as the switch is operated, swapping the relays around usually reveals the faulty part as the spoiler would go up but not come down in your case.

Gary - Great idea! I love the look of your spoiler, but unfortunately my wife would hate it! It has taken me 5 years to convince her that a 911 is a practical car for my daily commute to work.

Thanks for the advice. I will take a look at the weekend.

Hi Guys,

My 996 TT has just gone to the OPC in Guildford for its major service. B4 it went in I also has a problemn with the rear retractable spoiler which only retracted on one side when the vehicle went back below 75mph.

I bought the vehicle last Sept so am still within the 12 months warranty, however the service rep has told me that if the cause is hydrolic they will need to replace and it will not be covered under warranty at the cost of approx £700+ labour!

My question is has anybody had this problem? and does anybody know if this is def not covered.

Thanks

KH

Talking to a fella at Goodwood on sunday morning - he'd had that problem with his (warranty job too I think) and was musing about the possible cause of a flat battery...

Had the same problem on my 997 when it was only a couple of months old. Switch would not override so the spoiler stayed up. I was about to take it into the dealers when a colleague advised me to take the car for a burst and go through the activation / deactivation speeds. I can't tell you at which point it reset but when I stopped the car, the spoiler had retracted.
