Best ever F1 lap?

However, you say he's in a Ferrari.

Therefore it's not Senna

Therefore it's not Senna's first lap at Donington in '93.

Therefore it's not the best ever F1 lap.

Didn't like the guy, wasn't upset when he died, never thought he was the driving messiah that everyone thought he was.

But sh1t that was good.

Muzzer, you therefore need to watch this Villneuve Vs Arnoux as it is far far more spectacular than the Senna donnington 1st lap and it wasn't even for the win! Not to take anything away from the great man.

I posted that video to support my case for having Gilles Villeneuve as my all time number 3 driver. Ironically he was never world champion whist his son, who was nothing special as a driver, was.

Another special Gilles moment. In a very wet practice session for Watkins Glen in 1979 he was 11 seconds faster than the second car. Imagine that, 11 seconds faster in one lap.

Even Senna didnt think that the Donington lap was his best, he said it was all down to the traction control when compared to his first win, in the wet, at Estoril, which was all him.

Even Senna didnt think that the Donington lap was his best, he said it was all down to the traction control...

The Villneuve/Arnoux lap is far superior.. The Senna was good but not in the same league

Although, I always think its funny that people dont credit Arnousx for it as well- afterall, if he was not a good driver, it would'nt havemade that lap

Although not recorded very well on film (and not at all on TV), Fangios laps of the Nurburgring after his poor pitstop in 1957 where he caught and passed both Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn is also regarded as one of the greatest laps in "Grand Prix" racing.

As ever, people seem to equate "F1" with "Grand Prix". Don't forget there was Grand Prix racing from 1906 to 1947 and F1 from 1948 to 1951. In 1952 and 1953, GP races were run to F2 specs.

a) the Villeneuve /Arnoux battle was over two to three laps - not one (as is obvious from the clips).

b) that particular Ferrari WAS NOT a bad handling car. In fact, the 1979 World Champion was Jody Schecter and guess what car he was driving? Note also that, despite the now God-like status G Villeneuve seems to have these days, it was his team mate Scheckter who strung the results together to win the championship that year.

The REALLY bady handling Ferraris that Villeneuve had to contend with were the 1980 and 1981 cars which was the first turbo powered Ferraris. By 1982 it was working well and, if Villeneuve hadn't died, might very well have been the World Chamionship car. As it was, Ferrari did wimn the Constructor's Championship in 1982.

one of the best laps i saw was senna at magny cours( cant remember the year )was a qualifying session and was senna last lap and for the last corner, the tight hair pin , didnt brake on purpose spun the car over the line crashed it into the pit wall, claimed pole position and just got out the car and walked off. the best driver in my opinion would win at all costs.

Please read more about Gilles before you post stuff like that.
Gilles could have overtaken him many time if he was like some of todays ( and Senna) drivers but Gilles was better than that.
It is a well known fact that Gilles was a 'Gentleman' in the true sense of the word.

IMHO Gilles was the fastest driver ever, note I say fastest, not greatest. But had he had a good car he, without any doubt would have been the greatest ever - period.

And without doubt a talent that has not been seen before or since.

I give you a quote from Gilles when interviewed by Nigel Roebuck - it went something like this:
Gilles had just gone off into the catch fencing and was nursing a cut.
NR: Did you run out of road?
GV: No, I ran out of lock.

Senna devalued himself by not allowing a fast/good team mate.

MS devalued himself by cheating - ok he was helped by the FIA.

GV never devalued himself.
