Hey, once the beastie is back on it's wheels - and before the wishbones collapse..

I wondered if anyone else is up for a group visit to a rolling road to get the true 'at the wheels' output of our cars. Think it would be a great giggle and I for one am dying to know what an AS 550 motor translates to where it really counts!!

Anyone got any ideas on where and when?

Pete

Funnily enough amigo, I have managed to get myself invited along with the Nobility to just such a day up at a rolling road in Potters Bar. It is on 7.4.07 and I am sure that they would not object to your good self coming along also. It is not my place to 'invite you' myself you understand but I am sure that it won't be a problem. The establishment is called Crazy Horses and I rang and spoke to Tony, the proprietor, last week and he certainly seems to know the score, so I don't think he will be wrecking any engines and the dyno goes up to 1350BHP, which is nice yes
If you have a mind to, look on the Noble forum Re; Dyno Day. Let me know how you get on bandit

How is the dyno run performed?
Does it use all the gears and all available revs.
Logic would indicate that there is little point going too far above the max torque point and you could do that in any gear.

They also plot the run down to give the transmission loss I think.

Steve, the dyno works this way:
You put your car on the ramp with the driven wheels between two rollers and the car is suitably strapped / fastened down. The operator then sits in the car, accelerates up through the gears whilst fiddling on his laptop. If you are fortunate and your engine does not expire during this process, the calcs are done and you end up with a true rear wheel horse power figure, simple.

"you end up with a true rear wheel horse power figure"

True on that rolling road, on that day with the variables the RR operator has set.

Rolling roads vary enormously, just make sure you go to one where the figure is realistic and not to inflate egos (although with Wayne that's probably difficult)

Powerstation to the West are pretty good, John Noble Motorsport in the Mids are good - only RRs I've had experience of in the South are Power Engineering, which give great, but unrealistic figures (std Scoob P1 made 319hp there, next week, virtually identical temp, it made 270hp @ John Nobles)

RRs are really only any good for a bit of a laugh and as a benchmark for future mods.

Still, if it's with the Nobles and you 2 go, shouldn't be too hard to comfortably have the 2 highest figures

My point is that if we all went on the same day, then the variations of different RRs and operators would be irradicated - and it would be a laugh etc etc.

How about inviting one of those portable ones to an event such as Stoneleigh - or somink?

The Crazyhorses Dyno is the same one as in the links below

Some bigger HP cars
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9I0WxjWvkg
1336 HP at the rear wheels
www.xr8chic.com/images/summernats17/dyno_1336.mpg
1311 HP at the rear wheels
www.aussieimportsllc.com/tassone-dyno.mpeg
1023 bhp at the rear wheels
www.aussieimportsllc.com/hphero.wmv

its fully portable and can be taken to a show/racetrack

the Dyno operates in shootout mode which means the operator can not interfere with the power measurement and the test is performed exactly the same every time - no matter which one of these Dyno's you take your car to.

Hi pete good idea although you will want to make sure your new engine is run in and got new oil in it !!!!!! Dave Walker at emerald is very good but i think his rollers only go up too 400hp ,would be nice to have a run out . simon

I'm game for this but suspect that we may need to book a day all for ourselves.
I seem to recall someone saying you needed to remove the rear clip for both strapdown access and cooling. This will all take time reducing the number of runs you can get in a day.

I went to a dyno day run at www.dastek.co.uk|Dastek in Dalgety Bay a few years back (see their site for details...). They make the dynos (in UK + South Africa) and know their stuff. Didn't have to do anything to sort out the cooling. Just had a really big 3kW blower and a portable 1kW blower put in front of the car this seemed to do a very good job at keeping the oil and water temps in spec.

All they did was stick the car in 4th and press the loud pedal at 1k rpm till it hit the rev limiter. They then hit the clutch and let it all coast to get the transmission losses. You shouldn't need to mess with changing gears on a dyno...

Same dyno as Crazy horse racing, Dyno Dynamics. 7.5Kw cooling fan. The dyno is in the ground for more ground clearance.

Lots more info on the website

From experience, it's very hard to stop the car from slipping on the rollers. It took 4 BIG blokes and 4 ratchet straps to even have a hope on my old GTR-S. That was on Dave Walker's rolling road (and yes, it only measures up to about 350bhp then you use a torque curve calculation). My old car set the record (dunno whether it still holds it) on his rolling road.

Should'nt have any problems on the Dyno Dynamics rollers. They are a much newer design that Dave's ones

Well, we need to know how many of us are up for a go on the rollers and the only way I know of being able to accurately asses this is to get one of those lists going, a bit gay I know but what else is there?;

so far the most power we have had on the Dyno Dynamics Dyno in the uk is 1875 HP at the wheels
