Went for a walk near to my house (about half a mile away) and took a few snaps. Unfortunately my batteries were dying every 5-6 seconds so couldnt really set any shots up.

Advice and comments always welcome as i am the definitive amateur...

Charge the batteries first?

Nice advice

a. If i had rechargeable batteries

and

b. If i could be bothered going to the shop to pick some up, lol.

It was more a leaisurely stroll anyway rather than an all out photo shoot.

Your first shot is my favourite, for a few reasons. Im hardly the expert either, but what stands out is the fact that you have a clearly defined subject, and a reasonably good exposure, with no dark or murky areas transposed against a comparitively bright horizon.

I wouldnt know how to expose correctly for those settings, without a tripod, 2 frames blended together and photoshop (something Ive never done or tried) or a grad filter (something else Ive never tried)

The shots which have white sky in them are really tricky to do. In addition to UKBob's advice, I suppose fill flash might help with some (although I haven't tried this much). Blending two exposures in PS later can be done, but the trees make it much more tricky (it can be done though). If it's windy things get even harder becasue the trees will move between exposures.

I like the closer in ones without white sky for this reason. No 1. is nice and could possibly be made even nicer through a bit of work on contrast (more of it) and a boost to saturation, but this is obviously a personal thing. It's good that you have this subject close by as I think there's a bit of potential for trying lots of shots from different angles and distances to see what you can find. Some black and white would probably be nice too as it might suit the moody ivy covered feel. Different times of day would be worth exploring as well (very early on a misty morning could be terrific).

I also like the well-lit tower pic. If you're going back, it would be nice to see some more of this subject. e.g. similar shot but showing base as well, perhaps one with tower in foreground but off to one side with countryside beyond. I took one of a castle a little while ago - don't know if it's any good, but it illustrates what I mean.

Ramble over

Cheers
Stuart

Resizing the displayed pictures to 750 pixels or less would be good - they're taking an eternity to load up!

(Number 1 is the best - for reasons given above)

love the second image looking through the archway. with desaturation and more contrast, it would look very resident evil imo.

for some reason, i don't know why, i really like the last image too.

Some nice images there - although a few have no real "impact" or anything to draw you in.

I think that several would benefit from B&W treatment. For example:
