Excuse my ignorance but being new to these engines (previous experience is with an MGB) can anyone tell me what is the purpose of the plenum and the swirl pot? What is under the cover of the plenum - can it be taken off to take a look inside?

Sorry if these are obvious or silly questions, but if you don't ask you don't find out!

Thanks

Peter

Here's a look at what's under my plenum!

In laymans terms it's where the air gets into the cylinders, via a set of 'trumpets'.

The swirl pot...well it holds water scratchchin I'm sure someone will come along with a more in-depth description soon...

Here's a pic of the underside of the plenum/trunpet base. Bit out of focus, sorry! You can see the top of the inlet manifold, the bottom of the trumpet base, and the underside of the plenum above it. Yes, the trumpet base is fastened on the wrong way round!

The swirl pot as far as I can understand is meant to swirl the water to remove any air from the coolant.

Phil was too polite to add that the swirl pot may also be used as a worn engine mount indication device

Dave

Looks like your engine needs exorcising Phil
