I think it's time to admit it, I think mines about to give up!

SO!

Does any one have any experience of suppliers/fitters of recon engines, I know It's probably going to cost more than the cars worth, but apart from that it may as well be new!
Oh, it's for a Xantia, the 2litre turbo one

cheers, Lee

My brother got a second hand engine for his Puma from www.247spares.co.uk. They send your request to loads of breakers/dealers who then contact you directly. It had a 90 day warranty and cost about £400.

We fitted it ourselves, so don't know what it's likely to cost to have done by someone else.

£1200 fitted, seems quite good, shame I could get another of the same car for £1300!!! (but newer!)
Very tempted, would have to turn round and go straight back though for the first service though!

I used 247 spares, the place who had the bits, PCR Recyclers sent half the wrong bits in a well shagged oily box falling apart.

Was pretty annoying as I got someone elses CC receipt, with my invoice for parts, which clearly stated an intercooler and the hoses (component to component), checked quantities of parts I ordered etc etc with them, and they still sent out the wrong parts.

I'd err away from these kinds of businesses to avoid disappointment with people who promise but fail to deliver.

Try go see the thing your buying before you actually give money for it

Good feedback is always key!

Hope you get it sorted soon

Don't bother.

90% of these places are crap holes. Read the small print. 60K mile warranty. ONLY if you have them service it at their extortionate rates.

Find a good local one man band garage and they'll be able to rebuild yours for a lot less money providing your main castings are ok.

Lee, my mate just bought a used engine from Dickieg on Activanet, it was claimed to have upwards of 80k miles. So far we have stripped it and found NOTHING wrong with it (apart from water pump) the bearings seem hardly touched, the bores are nice and all seems within tolerance. We are putting it back together with new water pump, a lick of paint and new belt and tensioner. So all including engine gaskets etc so far it has cost him around £350 and he has a good condition turbo engine for his 205. These units dont seem to get a hard life in the Xantia and if looked after can do lots of miles. Mines only on 55k so i have a bit of catching up with you yet

So instead of getting a recon engine maybe look for a good low mileage engine for less than half the cost instead?

Had an appalling experiance with Heathrow Motors/ MPH Engineering/Heathrow Engine Centre/reconditionedengines.co.uk (all trading from the same shithole of a site in Southall) and would advise anyone to steer clear of them. was quoted £1200, ended up paying £2400+ took them over 2 months to install and rectify the faults on their "Remanufactured" engine and have only just managed to nurse (with various visits to another competant garage) the engine through its 12,000 mile warranty period before the head gasket gave way at the weekend.
BBC watchdog has also invesitigated this lot.... Dont go there!!!!
