Hi,

Just wondered if anyone had any ideas what sort of power I can expect from the following mods on a 4L '93 Chim;

Tornado ECU
Piper 285 cam

I know that putting it on a rolling road will be the only way to know for sure, but I'd be interested to get a ball park figure of what they should be standard and what mine could have...

Cheers,

Mike

As standard...about 170 to 180 Bhp at the rear wheels for an average well maintained/serviced car with no mods. Couldn't even begin to guess what you'll get with the Chip & Cam you've got.

You can always ask (PM) Vixpy1 - I'm sure he'll confirm this. I got 173 on his RR and 180 on TVR Power's RR. Both said that it was an "average to just above average" score for a '97 4L Chim.

My old 1994 4.0 made 175 bhp at the rear wheels on Vixpy1's rollers.
I'd take a guess at 5-15bhp extra for your mods ?

The 285 cam is not recomended without big valves, as it needs a higher RPM to get more power and the standard valves are a bit restrictive at higher gas flow speeds. Its quoted at 30 BHP extra over the Range Rover cam, (180 BHP at the crank) but TVR already use a high lift cam. The Tornado chip chucks in loads more fuel, but TVR have already altered the fuel map. You are looking at least £750 worth of bits, and I dont think it would provided any significant power increase.

Mine made 230 hp at the crank after fitting a 218 cam and setting up on Austecs RR by Marc Addams. Previous mechanic said the heads have been ported during an earlier topend rebuild.
Hope that helps a little.

Cheers Jens

my '94 with ACT trumpets and smooth intakes made 224 at the engine on vixpys R/R, so I guess take that as a comparison. Standard cam/heads, I believe.

I've come to realise that it's not the power under the bonnet but the ability of the person behind the wheel.

I've therefore invested in shocks/springs and a decent wheel alignment, and the next step is some driver training.

Just thought I'd get that off my chest!

Mike

(oh, and the pre-serp cars produce better power figures, allegedly)
