Apologies if this has been posted before. I know there was talk of it a few weeks ago.

This just can't happen......

If I fill this in I can expect an email from Mr Blair explaining why I'm wrong and why he'll ignore this petition, just like the road charging one...

probably. but you never know.

what i'd like to know is how they plan on policing it if they do make it law and what about tourists? most of them come here to take pictures of the architecture (sp). that's my guess what they come for, because it's certainly not the weather. could be the free health service and handouts, but i think i'll leave that political route well alone.

Is that for real..? Thats complete gobshite!

Bad enough here in Aus when we went to a kiddies production of peter and the wolf at christmas to be told no taking pictures due to copyright laws..! How can you deny taking a picture of your kid in their first production? i nearly recited the copyright laws back to the silly bint as taking a private photo of your child in a production does not constitute a breach of copyright - i'm sure of it!!

Could a response to that, perhaps, be that ok "I will take the pictures. It is my distribution and using of the photos that will be breaking the so-called copyright law and therefore feel free to prosecute me to the full extent of the law should you be able to when I do such things with the photographs"

(my knowledge is poor, but you get the idea...?)

It is a fundamental right of a UK citizen to use a camera in a public place, indeed there is no right to privacy when in a public place.

Now I don't dispute this is true. But then I don't dispute it was a fundamental right of the Vikings to Rape and Pillage - you get my drift.

But should it be a fundamental right under all circumstances?

Are we saying that it is up to the photographers own.... well what, conscience? morals?... to determine whether and where there is a line over which you don't cross?

As law-abiding "non-threatening to society" photographers are we content to sit back and let people who would use photography in a way in which we do not approve - whatever that is - continue unchecked?

What about photographing on private property? Where does public end and private start? Trafalgar Square and the London Eye are obvious cases in point. What might be more useful is a clear concensus (we are still in a democracy, right?) over, and clear guidelines/byelaws/rules/statute law or whatever for all of us to work within.

I would vigorously defend my and your (where I approve!) right to take photgraphs in public places of public events and scenes. I just don't know whether a petition like this is properly thought through....
