Squeaking Brakes

My GTO 2.5 front brakes squeak when braking to a halt at slow speeds in crawling traffic. They have done so occasionally since new pads were fitted 6 months ago. In the past couple of days it has returned with a vengeance. Any suggestions on how to stop it would be gratefully received.

I've experienced the way you drive.... you hardly use your brakes, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Put some oil on them.

Well, not oil, but Copperease on the back plate of the pads. Be *sparing* with it and don't get it on the pad material itself and it will stop the squeak.

Usual way to get rid of squeaking brakes is to put a few heat cycles through them. Get on a trackday, that nearly always sorts it.

What pads have you got on? Standard road pads shouldn't really squeal and neither should the more track oriented DS2500s. But you do need a bit of Copper Slip back, top and bottom when they're inserted. Do this and a few heat cycles to de-glaze them and you should be fine.

How bad were the pads that you changed ? Very low pads put a lot of heat into disks

If copperease offers only temporary cure your disks are worn, because the metal to metal contact between the back of the pads and the calipers rocks slightly (squeaks) with the undulation of the worn disks.

i used ot own a car that did this with DS2000 pads fitted

the solution was to run a hose over the calipers when i washed it to get rid of all the brake dust !

Mine has been doing this recently on and off, but since I got it back from the service it has stoped. So maybe the fact that the wheels came off and they brushed the area to look maybe the answer as Gadge says brake dust.
