I'm about to buy an eos 400, asked in Jessops if it will work with my 540ez flashgun and was told 'no problem' - I'm not sure. Can anyone help?

I am pretty sure that the EZ series flashes will not work with Canon's DSLR range as the firing voltages are different and you can damage your camera.

The EX series flashes work fine though.

I had to buy a new flash when I bought my first DSLR for just that reason

few hundred quid down the drain then.... I've got a good canon 35 -105 usm lens - is is worth using this with an eos400 or stick with the lens it comes with? Camera minus lens save £10 at Jessops,

The flash will work but only in full manual mode. No E-TTL unless it's an EX flash.

See 1st paragraph..

I use a 420EZ with my 20D.
Googling revealed that my camera would not be damaged but the flash would only work in manual.
It works fine, the flash zoom even follows the lens zoom.
To be honest I never understood the automatic flash malarky; using the flash on manual seems far easier - honest
