Just read this in the local paper -

A plan to issue letters rather than fines to speeding motorists has won the support of the East riding of Yorkshires senior traffic officer, Inspector Dick Cockerline.
The scheme proposed by Councillor Stephen Parnaby Leader of East riding concil, would see motorists on a first speeding offence basis of 10% over plus 4mph getting a warning letter. Inspector Cockerline said "people who are generally good drivers will take the letter into consideration and hopefully take more care"

Example 30-34 no fine
35-37 warning letter
38+ fine

Good to see a bit of common sense at work for a change

It would be better to see some real initiatives to address the remaining 95% of causes of death and injury on the roads.

How about increasing speed limits so people don't need to "speed" to drive normally. Bit of common sense here would win back some respect from motorists.

I would agree with that *if* relevant speeds were adjusted. For example not changing back roads from a 30mph limit to 40mph limit and not increasing speeds limits outside schools.

As regards to perfectly safe Dual Carriage Ways and Motorways, I would be more than happy to see increased limits.

I think we can expect Inspector Dick to be sidelined and pensioned off in the very near future. We carnt have traffic officers talking sensibly, what would happen next, safety partnerships having to concentrate on safety?

This is the cash squeeze starting to work. They can't afford to process so many fines from 1st April.

had a 121 chat with a bike plod, made me slow down a lot more than fines did, so letters are a good idea as sometimes u might not realise u have gone ove the limit by 1-2 mph or so

I don't understand. Speed kills, we all know that. The only way to be a safe driver is to stick to an arbitrary speed. At 35mph we will be mowing down children left right and centre due to excessive speed in a built up area. 30 is the only safe speed to drive at, the only way we can ensure we don't hit a child. A letter won't stop this mobile massacre. Won't someone please think of the children. etc. etc. etc.

Hypothecation ends at the end of this month. No fines money for cameras. No 'netting off'. No 'national speed camera programme'.

Instead from 1st April local authorities receive a 'road safety grant' capped for at least four year. This is the good part: The road safety grant isn't ring fenced. It's isn't even ring fenced for road safety, let alone cameras.

All sorts of things will eat into the speed camera budgets. New pedestrian crossing? Meals on wheels out of cash?

Clearly the DfT are fully aware and have done it on purpose. They have discovered that their speed camera data was crap and they are in full retreat. But we won't stop firing on them until they TELL THE TRUTH.

Yes, 20mph limits past schools isn't a bad idea.

HOWEVER

As posted in another thread (not by me though):
There were 3,500 road deaths last year
1,000 of these were attributed to excessive speed
58% of motorists regularly break the 30mph speed limit

.... so the other 2,500 were caused by the 42% who don't speed?

And BTW, the AA and RAC also agree that the speed limit on motorways should be increased to 80mph in lime with the continent.

All to Gordon, none to the SCP.
