Clifford Alarm

I have a Clifford Alarm switch on my key fob along with an "abus plus" key which looks like an alarm on/off key. I can see the siren and some dodgy looking wiring here and there but have not yet come across an alarm unit... I expected to see it alongside the fuses and ECU but I dont see it... 
there is also a light on the steering column cowl which illuminates with the ignition sometimes but not others, I suspect this is part of the immobiliser circuit but as I say it doesnt actually make any difference on or off.
I'm hoping I have a working alarm which has simply been switched off (with the key) ?
Could someone give me a clue what the unit looks like and where these are normally located.
