Ok I know this is a sensitive area and I don’t want to open old wounds I am genuinely interested in hearing from you if you have bought a Tuscan since new (or know its history from new) and have had no expensive engine rebuilds.

I am considering changing the Chim and have two cars on my list, an S2000 or a Boxster 3.2S. However the car I would really like is a Tuscan, but I don’t want to be faced with massive engine repair costs.

I want an idea of how reliable they are, I have read the doom and gloom stories and I am not interested in hearing anymore, what I want to know is, has yours been fine? Do you use it regularly? How many miles a week do you do? Has it been fine since a rebuild – how many miles / long ago was that?

I suppose what I am trying to identify is can I take a punt on a Tuscan without worrying too much; is the best solution to find a car that has already been rebuilt?

Or is it simply a case of the only people who post on here about engines are those that have problems and there are hundreds of Tuscan owners out there who have never had a problem? If so please speak up!!

had mine a year, had absolutely no problems at all with it. you'll get different answers and experiences on here. my suggestion - just do it, you know you can't really be as happy in the other 2 choices...

hi matt. i have a 2000 x tuscan in factory red rose spec. had it for about a year now, only problem being a sticking throttle pot (about £400 to replace including fitting and tappet adjustment). one owner before me from new who used the car for weekend driving and track days and according to him has never missed a beat. now coming up to 20000 miles with no history of a rebuild and goes as sweet as ever. think you have to expect a rebuild at some point but as long as its warmed up properly and serviced regularly you really shouldnt have any problems till around 35000 miles when they need a rebuild i believe. ive driven both the s2000 (work at a honda garage) and the boxster and there is just no comparison either in noise, looks OR performance, plus it really upsets the boss when i bring it to work and park it next to his s2!!!!! just go into buying one with your eyes open, pick the best one you can afford and enjoy yourself!!!!!! lifes too short not to own a tuscan rotate

The other two are both truly brilliant cars. I have driven both and own the Box. But if you actually want a Tuscan buying something else won't satisfy and you'll be left in a year's time wanting to change and suffering the cost.

Hopefully some owners will come along soon with some realistic views on running one.

confused sorry, i forgot that my view can't be realistic as it's only based on my REAL life experiences with my Tuscan. Surely it can't be any more realistic than that?!

Ive had 2. Both from new. Had the first 2 years and have had this one 2 years. Usual small TVR niggles all sorted by my excellent dealer. 30,000 miles AND NO ENGINE PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER.

I realise that makes me an unrealistic lying bastard but then I'm just an owner, not an "expert".

Thanks for the replies so far everyone - just out of interest (not sure it makes any different to reliability or not), could I ask the age of your cars as well?

I would be looking at around 2000 / 2001 spec.

Many thanks

There has been a huge thread started by JSG about this with a poll etc.

I must be too, as I have had 2 S6's without a single engine fault.

Bought my Tuscan 2 new in October 2005. Done 15,000 miles since then. Runs sweet as a nut and just gets better. Only things to go wrong in that time are 2 failed Lambda sensors (not bad petrol related), a water temp sensor, and a thottle cable. Highly recommended thumbup

owned it 2 years now, spent 12 grand in 6 months on full 2006 spec blueprint rebuild (the later the better & 6 mths warranty left) by TVR Power, new clutch, nitrons, this and that, front end respray blah de blah de blah....had enough now even tho its a minter, anyone wanna buy it? its hurt my pocket too much to keep loving it PM me if you're interested....btw its never broken down on me tho!!! so in answer to your question ...yes it has been reliable! even more so now
...in Starmist Chianti with beige interior & ipod alpine with extra rear speakers and subwoofer too... only around the corner Matt?

After 5 engines it was fantastic - it was always fantastic just it went really well on the 5th engine!

The first rebuild should have been spotted by the dealer as it was required before I collected it from new - they didn't and they aren't dealers any more. After the 1st first service (I had 4) I went back to using the factory for servicing.

The factory gang always did a great job and I must have done 100k miles in TVRs. The Tuscan was used every day insun, rain, wind & snow and it was great. The aircon always worked and the only other issue I had was with the roof mechanism but that was soon modified.

They where great days and for 9 years I only ran TVRs as a daily drive. It was handy having a Cerbera & a Tuscan for a while just in case!

I've had mine for about 3 years. No problem except the electrics and in particular the display controller. Just always always always warm the engine up properly. After that ensure you use it for what is designed to

Oh and for the times you want to rev it before warming up properly (e.g to impress mates or a cute girl or because you are late) STOP BEING A {fill in insult as desired} and warm it up properly first

Had a 2001 Tuscan red rose for two years Never missed a beat.
Always warm them up first, give them care/respect & you should have a big grin on your face.
