Flaking paint on a 6 year old car
Discussion
Hi All
I have a real problem with the paint on my car and was hoping someone could advise what may have caused it and what I can do about it.
The car is a yellow 2001 Seat Leon so its less than 6 years old, but the paint has faded quite badly on the bonnet / roof and in the last few months there have been in increasing number of small patches that have started going white and peeling off mainly on the bonnet.
Here's a pic of a patch of paint thats peeling which I took this morning:
All the white bits you see above are lifted paint/laquer, you can flake it off with your nail just by rubbing it. What makes me think its laquer is that its (unfaded) yellow underneath, but could be a layer of paint I guess.
A good friend of mine owned the car from brand new so I know its all original bodywork / paint, so its either a paint defect from new, or something has spilled on it. Looking over the car there are about 10 similar sized patches (several cm long) on the bonnet, a couple on the roof and one on the bootlid, plus literally hundreds of tiny spots like it across the bonnet, roof and tops of the doors / boot, some broken through, some not (yet). Interestingly there aren't any on the boot spoiler or wing mirrors, both plastic parts where the paint hasn't faded at all.
The Leon only has a 3 year paint warranty so probably not an avenue I can persue, and I know they'd just say something has been spilt onto it, which to be fair is what it looks like as the patches are predominently on the bonnet, then some on the roof and a bit on the tailgate / tops of the doors, all places where a splash of something would land, but equally where the sun catches and fades the paint.
If it is a chemical of some sort that's done this though, it has taken a very long time to rot the paint. Ive had the car over a year now and when I bought it there was one very small patch on the bonnet which we just put down to being a stonechip that had allowed water under the paint, and its only got anything like this bad in the last 3-4 months so whatever has done it has taken well over a year to manifest itself.
On top of that, my mate's wife was quite meticulous at cleaning / polishing it every couple of weeks so it would have always had a layer of Autogylm on to protect it from bird crap etc. Since I bought it I haven't really polished it to be fair, but this shouldnt be the result!
Any comments / suggestions welcome, at the moment the car looks like a flock of birds has crapped all over it and I can't see any solution other than a complete respray!
!
