has anyone here owned both an early and a late (facelift model) chimaera, if so any difference in the cooling. The later model has no grill and bigger vents in the bonnet so I just wondered if the heat build up was any less, or was this purely a styling exercise.

Hopefully they will rebuild my car after last weeks accident and was wondering if a later front end might be better.

I would think that the bonnet vents are bigger for a good reason.

Running my car (95, old bonnet) stationary for a while recently, the fans switch on and off again quite quickly with the bonnet open, whereas with it closed they stayed on for ages (until I got bored of waiting anyway). Temp. was stable, just not coming down!

It was quite a warm day in a sheltered location, and I have a lower stat for the fans, but it does suggest that there may be a problem getting rid of the heat from under the bonnet, which isn't particularly surprising.

Cheers,

Andy

I read somewhere I think, that the larger vents and front with no grill were incorporated from lessons learned in Malaysia where the climate is hotter.

Sounds promising, do you know anymore were did you read about this. I may have the choice of a new front and was keen to make the most of my bad fortune. in the summer the heat build up can get unbareable. Have been told that aftermarket A/C is no good (even by the factory) Ive already got 2 stage cooling and an override button

I can have a look for you I think that it might have been in autocar. Wont be able to look for you till I am back at my parents on sunday I am afraid.

In my humble opinion the early style front works fine provided the number plate is moved off the grill and screwed into the lower chin body work. I think the problem is air removal so the larger vents on the later bonnet probably are what makes the difference if there is one. Remember air expands as it gets hot, So you might need say 4 times the vent area for hot air extraction than the area you have for cool air entering in the nose. Thats my HO anyway!

Alex thanks for that, I wanted to keep the early front if I could (I think it looks better)with the later bonnet. I have already mover the number plate (see profile) and just wanted get the hot air away as much as possible.

i would take a look at bigger fans, maybe Griff(later type) or even Cerbie, the fat one not the skinny. You will need to uprate your wiring/fuse box/relays, or take the easy route of tapping the starter motor with one wire. My Griff has 50% more to the fans than standard, and i had two fuse/relay system! Of course you could try this with your fans first.

thanks for the info am a bit confussed can you help me here. The twin stage cooling you fitted (silver Chimaera last summer)did much to improve the heat problem (Umbria last summer) but in the London traffic it's still a bit oppressive.

Mark
ps if it goes okay tomorrow (insurance inspection) will be intouch for some more bits (light kit and started button) soon.

I had a look through this weekend and it is an autocar mini road test that mentions the changes in design of the front. Not sure how much help it will be for you but a copy is on this link about 3/4 of the way down the page in the text:
