Amazing find but what to do now?

Just taken off my sills on a 1984 350i and the out riggers are perfect, and I mean like the day they were made. I will have to findout how to post a picture.

Heres the question though, should I just leave it or cover it in hammerite or waxoil....etc?

The car was stood for maybe 15 years so thats why the chassis is so good but don't know what to do now?

Any ideas welcome

Absolutely, definitely cover it in loads of waxoyl. Its the mutts nuts. Slathe the buggers in it. When it gets hot in the summer, it wil soften in the heat and run into every nook and cranny, keeping the rust away as it goes.

Its something that very few classic car nuts disagree on. Its good. And more is better. Apart from brakes, and certain hoses (fuel hose is OK IIRC, as its benzene resistant anyway).

Last time I waxoyled I kept the tub in a bucket constantly topped up with boiling water for an hour or so after taking out of the airing cupboard and it still went stiff on me (oh er missis). And also thinning with white spirit is another method I have heard? But I would rather the black than the tin worm. I see a few mentions for POR?? sommit or another?

You can get clear waxoil, looks a bit better, It's a must though

My Chassis is painted is supposedly painted with 7 coats of POR15 and I noticed its flaking off - dont know whether thats down to the last owner who applied it though!

You need to get all that epoxy off, get back to bare metal. Then half-heartedly slap some chassis black on it and clag it back together with B&Q silicon and a few self-tappers.

Then one day, my son, will you learn the true wedge wisdom...

any advice having done this Mr Tom? I am planning the same outrigger 'exposing' job soon on my '84 350i and I just hope mine are as good as yours! is it easy peasy?

I havn't had any trouble I only had to drill out a few rivits and brush away the mud so far. To replace it am probably going to use some dow corning to temp. fix/seal it an then put some new rivits in.

Might redo the stone chip down the sill while its off makes life easy.
