Sunday Times said:
Last month police seized footage of drivers speeding through the Dartford tunnel under the Thames at speeds of up to 130mph.

It was over the bridge, not the tunnel.

Sunday Thames said:
Current laws restrict exhaust noise to 74dB on all new mass-produced cars. But exhausts deteriorate and become noisier, and some drivers fit sporty exhaust systems, which are louder.

Conjurs up an image if the bib breaking down a door and emerging with some big tin cans of film. How the hell can you 'seize footage' of stuff posted up on the internet? rofl

"Sergeant Mick Green of Essex police said: “There have been incidences of people doing 140mph and we had one case of someone doing 111mph in a 30mph zone. "

So only slightly faster than plod when testing their cars.

Is it me, or does the writer of that article, and it's intended audience, not have a clue what they are talking about? He seems to imply every car with aloud exhaust must be a boy racer driving dangerously

Surely every car has "aloud" exhaust? But, no comment regarding the misplaced apostrophe - Streaky

The average IQ of a journo is probably about the same as people who post on here. People posting on here are doing so about something they are interested in, yet still look at the the number of uninformed, ignorant rubbish that we get. So of course most of the media is full of uninformed, ignorant rubbish because they are writing about subjects they aren'r interested in. Every time I have been "in the know" about a major new story the media have got it completely wrong

btw the reference to rubbish postings on here is not intended to refer to negative creep or any other posters in this thread

Yes indeed - these problems have existed for YEARS - So blatantly the internet and you tube has nothing to do with it - it's just the same ol "oooOOoooohhh... be scared of the new tehcnology" crap they churn out on a regular basis...

"Videos posted on websites in Germany feature drivers showing off their BMW M3s on the autobahn over a heavy rock soundtrack."

NO! NOT a *heavy rock* soundtrack!!! Errr... Didn't anyone tell him that large quantities of autobahn are still unrestricted?! (I'm thinking of a word and it rhymes with Job!)

"through empty industrial estates, hurtling around roundabouts and performing 360-degree turns (known as doughnuts) in empty car parks."

Err.... So f-ing what then?

(eg)
"One video even shows footage of highly tuned multimillion pound cars hurtling around tracks such as Silverstone and Monza and even the streets of Monaco at speed close to 200mph!" <_< :P

I've never heard a car with a loud exhaust.

I've heard plenty of cars with loud engines though.

Authorities have powers against excessively noisy vehicles, but there is no simple way to measure decibel levels. However, Stephen Ladyman, the transport minister, said in a parliamentary answer that the department was considering a quick roadside exhaust-noise test, and would commission research to develop a suitable device

How's that gonna work, db readings across the whole frequency band would be hugely expensive, and the hand held jobbies are massively innacurate because of that. Anothet bit of equipment and hassle for the BiB..

W@nkers!!!!!!

I'm pleased I don't do any any of those naughty things......

It can't work they've been trying it for years on bikes and always come unstuck when roadside testing. About 6-7 years ago a Traffic car turned up at Box Hill one sunday and started pulling bikes with race cans for "testing" they produced a nice little handheld db meter and were reving bikes while taking readings right at the end of the can, it took about half an hour for one guy (who happened to be a manufacturer of exhausts) to nip home and collect a copy of the noise regs. The only way it can be done is properly and that makes it impossible at the side of the road, the regs show it should be a drive by reading from a meter on a tripod at a distance of x metres, it should be on a tarmaced surface but in a area free from other buildings and obstructions for again a range of whatever it was metres (so basically in the middle of a playground or a large empty carpark) anything else will give a false reading from resonated sound and could be ripped apart by a half decent solicitor, sound resonates and bounces of anything, it gets channelled, amplified and muffled by the environment and there is no legally enforceable way to monitor it that is portable and consistant, hell even the weather will make a difference to the readings !

Exactly, sound is a bugger to measure, especially in real world situations.

Not stirring it but. How do the organisers of track days at circuits, and Rally organisers conduct their sound level tests? Thought it was pretty much like that Box hill effort?

I would presume that it is not a problem because that is the terms of use of their track. If you don't like it, don't use the track - different to being illegal and strong enough to hold up in court.

is this true?

Flemke said there was no such law for noise produced from an exhaust for UK.

my ducati was rated at 126bd . . . . . but yes, it wasnt 100% legal .. .. .. its gone now anyways before vonspendmoretimeatworkonPHthandoinganythingproductive tries to lynch me
