Every 2 Thousand miles or so my revs become a little unpredictable when idling up and down. However I looked at the stepper motor and it looked as clean as a whistle.Could my problem be something else? or do they need a clean so often?

Once I started using Shell Optimax (V Power) I never needed to clean it again. Just the right blend of detergent additives I guess

I can understand how this helps,as Tvr bob states above, better detergents equals less carbon build up in the inlet manifold area, hence less deposits on the moving parts of the idle valve, worth a try Fiveyears after another clean anyways,i would say this goes for most super unleaded fuels(better detergents)

Not wishing to start a debate on the pros & cons of BP but I used BP ultimate for a while and found no obvious improvement regarding stepper coating. Only when I use V Power exclusively do I avoid the poor tick-over issue.

Bob,Thanks for your notes,I regularly use V Power, Only use BP when desperate,Went out tonight no problems,Ive noticed that the high idle mostly happens when I leave a motorway having driven at 70mph, then say approach junction ,into neutral and revs stick around 2000 revs, a blip on the gas pedal usually does the trick and revs back to 1000,Some days it happens, most days it doesnt, any more clues anyone?

Try to give it more time, this isn't uncommon. The stepper is still working; it's just a little slow to react. Don't blip the throttle, just wait. The tickover should finally come down. The stepper will need a good clean including the plug seat inside the chamber. This may be caused by the fuelling running a little rich.
