Just bought my first porsche and am starting to have doubts.

Took me almost a year to find a car.

Our car is the hairdressers special;
2004 2.7 986, Guards Red, One previous fastidious owner, garaged and used every day.
22,000miles and in first class condition, locally supplied and serviced.
17" Boxster S alloys (totally unmarked), Leather heated seats, Climate, Wind deflector, trip computer, Porsche wheel crests and a fancy exhaust embellisher.
Precious few stone chips and NO parking dents.
Two warranty claims from new, clutch and radio.
Paid £40 to get it inspected by a local independent, faults found;
1 NO oil leaks, I initially thought this was a fault as every car I had looked at previously had the crankshaft oil weep.
2 one horn trumpet inoperative (high one I think and approx £140 + vat in OPC))
3 Will require tyres soon, I am with Aon, between 3-5K PA, so next year then! and a good excuse to get the alignment done, is this really necessary if all tyres are wearing evenly and the car isn't pulling?

Now to the reason for my opening gambit, Our local dealer has an almost identical car (if such a thing exists) with 31,000 miles and PSM for £27500 and is no cleaner than mine. I paid £23500 and the seller assured me the dealer had offered £21,750 for the car.

Have I paid too much? Always hard to tell over here as there aren't that many around.

This explains why you've so far taken 1yr to find a Boxster.

I dont understand? your car has nearly 10k less miles but lacks PSM and it was 4k cheaper? wheres the problem.

You've just bought a stunning car - why the hell are you on here - get out there and drive it...!!!

Forget resale, depreciation etc. Deal with it when it happens and not when you've just bought the car.

Enjoy....

Where is "over here"? I'm guessing not London / the SE if there aren't many Boxsters around.

lost me too - that 9k miles saving is worth about £2k so you saved £6k buying privately (OK £5k once the dealer drops the forecourt price) - which is a rough margin the dealer would add on.

OK its red and not an S but at least its not a tip.

In hindsight, the only thing I might have done would have been to get an OPC 111 point inspection and tried to negotiate the inclusion of an extended Porsche warranty in the price.

Enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies guys (I think)

My worry is that the OPC price is GREATLY over inflated and my car really wasn't cheap at all, I thought Boxsters were relatively/fairly immune fron depreciation after a few years.

Did consider getting the Porsche check but the independent is an ex mechanic from the OPC and I am willing to take the risk on the warranty, I am fairly handy with a spanner, just ask the neighbours cat it still can't sit down straight.

Guess I was hoping you would give me an idea of prices for similar cars from your respective parts of the country (I'm in sunny Norn Ireland).

I would really have liked the 3.2 but bought the best one I could find (Red was my 1st colour choice, I have been reliably informed these are the fastest ones) and anyway It really doesn't matter as I can't drive for S@#T just as well the cars limits are well in front of mine.

Wifey and I are still on the honeymoon period (with the car I might add) and are out driving at every opportunity, really wierd driving in the dark on a country lane with the hood down and the exhaust howling, PURE BLISS!!!

I think you missed out the word "depreciating". Sounds like you like the car so why worry if you pay a few K over the odds, which if you bought from an OPC and did not bargain damn hard (esp. given the colour) then you would have. If you want to see similar prices go on the Porsche website car locator.

Why not come to UK to buy a car if they are in short supply in NI which may inflate the price?

Sounds like a sensible trade off! Have you read any previous threads here on taking out an opc warranty?
