Took a cooper S out the other day and there is a fair bit of back firing on overun. Is this normal? It seemed to run ok on acceleration?

Dont own one - but I often read how people love the fact that they 'pop and bang on the over run' so I would think its normal. Someone will be along shortly to give more info!

yup!

mine does it alot more in 2nd than any other gear.. i have wondered if it isn't engineered in by bmw to make you think it's cool!

when it was still low miles i was picking bits of baffle like materiel out of the exhaust pipes for a few months...

jcws do it a lot more too.

and if you put 99ron and it's a nice cool morning and the exhausts warmed up it's especially pop-tastic!

Test drove a GP a few weeks back and that make some cracking noises on the overrun. brilliant addition to the experience.
