Hi
My first post.
Been lurking for a while now.
Has anyone got any short clips of commentary driving.
It would be good to see how different people approach it (how they narrate what they observe)
Thanks
SM

Hiya Scoobman, and welcome.

When I attended a classroom session with the Scarborough IAM group last March, they showed a video of a police driver doing a commentary, so maybe somebody can make that available to us.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

If you can't think of anything else to say say "mirrors" and check them!

A few nice phrases:

"In the distance I can see...." (forces you to throw your vision forwards)
"options" left/right instead of trying to work out if it's a farm track or a B road, they're all options and they all require you to slow down and assess the situation.

A sample commentry approaching a round-about:

"Planning to stop, but looking to go, Mirrors
First point of danger is from the right,
Scanning right.
Am I in?
Yes I am.
Gear is two.
Offside mirror,
Nearside mirror,
Offside miror,
Back on to the gas,
Slowly, smoothly,
Gear is three"

Or,
"am I in?
No, I'm not. Gentle brakes to firmer brakes,
Scanning right,
handbrake on, gear is one
And I'm in...."

Approaching national speed limit signs:
"Range check (look at speedo)
Speed is 40, gear is 3
And accelerating smoothly"

Approaching reduced speed limit signs:
"Range check,
Speed is 70, limit is 40.
30 to loose.
Gentle brakes, to firmer brakes,
and cutting the tape at 40"

"near side mirror and in" (right hand bend, mirror, position)
"ofside mirror and out" (left hand bend, mirror, position)
"Good vision through the bend, going for the apex"

"It's a limit, not a target" (re. speed limits)
"Some pressure from the one behind, he looks in a hurry"
"I can see the tunneling effect from large vehicles using this road, watching out for the big one towards" (on small roads with trees cut into a tunnel)
"Anticipating the fast one towards"
"There is a farm on the left, expecting options and mud on the road"
"Warning sign, sharp bends to left then right"
"Slow in the road, so slow it will be" (for painted "slow" markers)
"slow in, fast out" (if you're pressing on through a corner)
"what goes off must come on" (passing an exit on an A road/M-way, antcipating oncoming traffic)
"looking for the reaction, got that reaction" (overtakes, cars held at junction)
"Solo approaching from behind" (shows that you've seen the motorbike that most drivers will miss until it's passed them, although my instructor saying "I can hear the solo behind, anticipating him overtaking" did amuse me when it was a Mitsubishi EVO about a mile away!)

"only a fool breaks the two second rule"

One of my instructors described it as "Hazard, system, jackanory"

I.e, identify the hazard, apply the system of car control and then talk about it if you've got time. A nice commentry is a sign that you can take in, assimilate, process and apply all the information available to you. If the commentry has t go out of the window to allow you to drive to a hig standard, then so be it. But if you've got time to throw in road surface conditions, junction names, descriptions of pedestrians, etc etc then all the better, it shows that you're not finding you advanced drive stressful and you've got time to talk.
