500 Acceleration - again

I posted a note a few months back regarding 500 acceleration, and how I felt either mine was a bit flat or I was just getting used to it... Having problems with pinking and having the timing retarded, I have religously stuck with 98 octane ever since.. However, filling up with 97 this weekend, it now goes like stink!! Would this be because the previously higher octane fuel is too stable for the retarded timing?? Reducing to 97, matches the timing of the engine better, and gives better performance?? I wouldnt have thought that changing the fuel would make a great difference, but the pulling difference in second and third is dramatic... Has anybody else noticed this??

Perhaps your car responds better to the different brand of fuel????

Karlr, by any chance was that Esso Super. As mine also runs much better on that than the rest of the pump fuel. 4.0HC.

Yes it was!! Ive never tried it before, but the difference was fantastic. Even when reverting to another popular 97 brand, it was no where near.. I am trying to find other garages in the area! Do you know any petrol location maps for Esso?

Hope you got back ok on Sunday, it was a great run, but i just had to get past that slow lorry!!!

From speaking to Alan and Cami, that North Berwick service station had brough in extra supplies of the 97 for the group, so it may just be that the fuel was fresh, and not the normal old stagnent stuff most garages peddle. There is an Esso garage in Whickam, and also on sandyford lane somewhere, but i'm sure there are more about up here.

Yes got back fine thanks... thought Id let you go ahead! Concentration was starting to dip, so thought it best to cruise back.. (thats my excuse anyway!) Thanks for the esso locations - ill have a tootle later and see if I can find them, hopefully its the brand and not just that it was fresh fuel.. shall find out over the next week!!
