Morning everyone !

Thought you may all like to have a punt at what's wrong with my motor.

Facts:-

Massive amounts of smoke are thrown out the back of the car under deceleration, and braking

Plug 1 badly carboned and fouled, all other 7 running fine

Small oil leak at front of sump / timing cover

No rattling is apparant from top or bottom of motor

Oil Pressure is fine

Water temperature is fine

No traces of water in oil

Performance seemed OK

After convincing myself (albeit optimistically) that I have an electrical issue, I have replaced all plugs, plug extenders, rotor arm and dizzy cap as well a new set of 8mm Magnecor leads. No difference ( but didn't mind spending the dosh as I'm keeping her for many years to come

Last night ran a compression test.....

Not good

7 cylinders 180 - 190 psi

No 1 cylinder 0 psi yes "0" (tested 3 times)

My options are in no particular order

1 - Holed / cracked Piston
2 - Badly damaged rings
3 - Valve problems
4 - Badly blown head gasket
5 - Cracked Cyl liner
6 - Cracked / Porous Cyl Head

Need a bit of light hearted PH pisstaking to help me though the next few days of uncertainty

I'm sure all will become clear Wednesday night when the cylinder head will be coming off (have to clear some space tonight for said major operation.

Anyone fancy picking a number or even better creating a new option, and saying I told you so after it's sorted

May buy a pint at the Growl for the nearest / funniest post (if I've got a Griff to bring )

Cheers

Slightly Miffed Moose

Andy, the point at which I knew you were in trouble was when you took me out in it in the pissing rain, floored it in 2 inches of water & made it wag it's tail!
Sorry to hear the bad news, it does sound a bit serious. I do know that the registration V7 TVR is for sale though, now that you are running a 7 cylinder car!!!!

Its the latest method to cut down on emissions. 8 cylinders bad... 7 cylinder better.

Long forgotten about, to be honest. I'm now trying to get over spending out £7k on my Corrado in upgrades, maintenance and restoration when the car was probably only worth £4k to start off with. eek

Just had a quick flick though the 6 pages and although similar is not quite the same

Mine is definately white oil smoke as opposed to steam (although could still be the same cracked head problem - will add it as no 6 on my list of options)

Kinda makes for depressing reading I must admit.

Alan your "V7 TVR" post is currently winning the free Growl pint

Sorry to say that it sounds like a broken piston ring to me, it might be worth trying a bit of redex in the cylinder first as it may just be a 'sticking' ring .....

best of luck

anyway think of what else you can do to it as its got to come apart anyway....

new cam, uprated pushrods, bit of head work.....

Cheeky Blighter !

We both know that it can not possibly be the rear shocks, now can it

Just means I can't afford to buy them off you now, as I 've got the mother of all parts bills coming in soon.

Still smiling though (through gritted teeth)

Moose

Yep, that's what it sounds like to me, especially if you are getting 0 psi from the Compression Test. If it was just blue smoke then, oil control ring on the way out, worn valve guide or seal, but with no compression, bust ring.

Can you feel any movement of air when the engine is cranking on the bad cylinder? ie. by putting a finger over the plug hole?

I hope its just a valve

No compression is generally valve trouble(exhaust is favorite)even with a broken compression ring you will still get readings, oil scraper & oil control still retain some form, of sealing, but it would be very lowconfused

That was my fifth theory, but wouldn't you get some top end rattling due to the excess play in the valve train (unless the hydraulic lifters take up any possible slack, that is)

Nothing else for it but to have the head off. Can't wait.

This does sound the most likely (sadly) but take the rocker cover off and check the valve assembly first.. then take a look at the cam & bucket..

But no cr is a bad sign.

Don't be tempted to drive it as a rod thru the block would not be fun.
