Morning...

I've just been offered a new job which is great news. However, they'll want me in the office for the first month which is 320mile round trip yikes

So, thought about buying a bike which I could sell at the end of the month for a low loss?

Do any of you guys have recommendations? I'd want the bike to be faired to avoid the wind blast.

Rob.

Many congratulations on the new job. clap

From Norfolk to where? Is it pretty much all motorways and are you looking at it as purely a cheap form of transport? (Does it also have to be fun?)

For ease of use I would suggest something with shaft drive and a large service interval. (Pan or BMW?) The advantage is that you won’t hit the resale value by adding a few extra miles and (assuming your not planning a daily commute) will have the luggage capacity for a few days without having to strap soft bags all over the bike.

Cheers!

From Norfolk to Reading each day But after that I'll be attending meetings, working from home. I just cannot stand the thought of stop / start on the M25 every day.

Would it not be easier to get a room in Reading for Mon night to Fri morning for 4 weeks?
I live on the edge of Reading, i may be able to help you find such a room if you want.

As for a bike, you can pick up a CX500 for next to nothing...

I did Bury St. Edmunds to Exeter weekly for 5 months a couple of years ago. Used the BMW K1 which was perfect for the job. Got through the Monday morning/Friday evening traffic on the M25, was happy cruising at a steady 85 to 90 all day (fast enough to ‘keep up’ with traffic but not fast to attract unwanted attention) and still gave almost 60mpg. (Could almost do the entire journey on 1 tank of fuel)

I would suggest that a daily commute for a month via the M25/M4 may not be such a good idea. You need your wits about you to do that run and twice a day (there and back), every day will be hard work. Added to that, it’ll cost more to travel each day than to stop over in a local B&B

If it's only for a month, is there not a train service that you could commute on, or is the cost prohibitive?

Thanks for the replies.

Hotel isn't an option as I don't like being away from the family. Train isn't direct from Norwich as I end up in Liverpool St which doesn't have a line to Reading so would take an age. I think the bike represents the best option as it will cut the journey time down.

Will have a look on the bike trader.

Could use my GSXR 1000 but I doubt my licence would be valid after a month

ST1100, no contest.

Fast enough to get you there, comfy enough to be able to walk (and work) when you get off, 40+ to the gallon, big enough to put a serious dent in any arsepipe who pulls out on you, carries more than enough gear and virtually guaranteed to sell for what you pay for it.
Even some 1990 bikes that were only £5 grand new still sell for over £2K.
I was getting insurance quotes of around £150 comp. with no NCD...
