Tyres & Nails
Discussion
Is it just me or does anyone else have problems with picking up nails and screws with their tyres?
Just drove 100 yrds to post a letter and heard a clicking from the rear on the way back - screw in the tread. It was at an angle so unscrewed it and the tyre's not gone down so maybe I'm ok? Do I need to get it checked?
1000 miles ago I picked up a nail in the other rear. No one would repair it so it had to be replaced - car was only a 1000 old at that point.
Picking up nails / screws every 1000 miles could get expensive, have I just been unlucky? I dread driving past skips now. Is it worth getting tyre insurance?

Just had a large nail in the rear (nearly new) offside tyre. Fortunately it could be plugged. £15 job. However if the nail goes through the tyre in the sidewall, from the shoulder down to the rim then it's a new tyre. They won't fit tubes anymore. Have you considered a pair of those circular brushes on the front like the street sweepers have? You never see street sweepers with punctures!!
I've had nails in tyres before and had them repaired for a tenner but even though it had a nail dead centre I couldn't persuade anyone to repair it because of the speed rating & type of car - they thought it was too risky in case it blew.
Turned into a bit of farce as Porsche didn't have any tyres of that type in stock, couldn't get any so had to change all 4. Although I only had to pay for one of the 4 it's still not exactly cheap.

i'd heard this sort of thing too but can find no evidence to say your not allowed to repair a z rated tyre or similair, anyone have anything definate about this?
I suppose the rear tyres are about twice the width of a normal tyre, so you've got twice the chance of it happening...
I used to have a regular punctures when my girlfriend lived near a scrapyard in Hackney. (No, really.) Problem half solved by the 1/2 mile detour to get to her house without passing the scrapyard. Problem fully solved when she moved in with me.
