Hi all and i need ya help please.

Now my T350 04 plate is running around 100 while driving constantly (dual carrage). While in traffic it shots to 110 to 115 and ALL fans are in nicely. Now i called Castle and discussed and Gary said as long as ya fans are all cutting in and you have no crap in the air intakes their aint alot i can do, this is fine he said. Now speaking to some TVR lovers and owners and most say "get it sorted its running to hot", but others say thats about right and yes its fine as long as all fans are in, and they are!! I went to book it in at Castle for this problem to get sorted and he basiclly convinced me not to bother, as it is fine. The water sensor fault comes up, what does that mean!! It that something to do with it maybe, am i getting a true reading? Im pretty stuck with this one.

AGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!! What is correct guys, i need proper clarification or have i already had it. What temp is correct for say driving on daul carrageway and what for sitting in traffic? And is it something maybe i can fix myself if it needs fixing?

Any help i would love to read.

get it fixed ,shouldnt go above 100c whatever the weather or anywhere near that at dueller speed, if it does get it checked out i had this problem last summer, blew two radiators. pain in the ass!!!!!!11

for what it costs just replace both water sensors, have it pressure tested to make sure there is no air getting in.

think it cost £50< to replace both sensors, takes 10 mins

I was going to say get it looked at, but if the experts say it's okay, I guess it's okay.

Having said that, mine only runs so hot when there's a problem - coolant leaking out of the expansion tank through the cap seal, in my case.

Can't hurt to be too cautious.

I must say ive never seen mine above 96. If its running at 110 -115 in traffic this cant be good assuming the temp sensers are reading right. As has been said if its only £50 to change em i would get this done first

Are you sure you don't have a leaky radiator? I had the same problem, turned out my rad had a split in it.

Hope you get it sorted anyway.

If your oil temp is Ok and you are not getting coolant spitting out of the expansion tank, it sounds like a sensor fault.

For such a simple job I'm surprised Castle did not change the sensors, did they have any in stock????

A simple suggestion that worked for me confirming a faulty temp sensor, is from cold to flick to the temp screen before starting up, all the temp sensors should read about the same when the engine is cold. I had one 10degC different to the other two (oil in my case).

Over 100 and 110 water temp is definitely not right. Like the others have said, 96-97degC is typical max water temp. Even during London Thunder, max water temp I had was 97degC in traffic.

Have you checked your coolant level?

I have the temperature screen on all the time and during a local blast last week i got a puff of steam from under the bonnet and realised something was amiss, so nursed the car back home whilst watching the temps mimic what you describe.

Called the AA out to take the car to Automedon who look after the car. Prognosis was a blown radiator which is currently being fixed! I'm also having the cooling system mod carried out (my car is an 04 model with the old system). I believe that with the old system, air locks (hope this is the correct term) are possible which can cause problems.

On top of a duff radiator/cooling system, two possibilities spring to mind:
1. Faulty sensor. Quick, cheap fix. If it's this, then when your car's running at 115 degrees or so, there won't be any steam coming out from the bonnet (at all)
2. Air lock in the radiator... It's a fairly common problem on them due to the orientation of the radiator. If this is the case, it'll be a couple of hours labour to clear the block & top back up with coolant. If, when the temperature reaches 110+ there's steam coming out, this is more likely to be the case. If so, do NOT let the car get this hot or you'll stuff it.

Either way, it's not right - get it taken in to the garage. yes

yes They're an absolute pig to do properly, though. Took TVR Power a good few hours to do mine, and it still had to go back for a second try (full marks to them for persevering, though - can't fault them )

An undetected pinhole leak on your radiator can lead to airlocks in the cooling system leading to high temps and intermittant water sensor errors. I know, this happened to me last year. Before the leak was discovered the system was bled which worked fine for a week but then the high temps returned with the water sensor errors. It was only when the radiator dumped coolant on my driveway that everythink came apparent. Take your car out for a run get it up to working temp return and park on your driveway. Let the engine tick over until the temp rises and then gently rev the engine keeping an eye on the temp guage. If the temp starts to drop whilst revving you have an airlock.
A garage can test for a pinhole leak on a radiator by doing a pressure test on your cooling system.

I had a pinhole leak in the radiator and very similar heat issues. I also decided to fit the second expansion tank as a safety precaution. The highest water temp i have since seen was in london thunder at 95c. Most of the time its at 91 and then the fans kick in and it falls quicker than the stockmarket on a bad day.

I think the general point here is it should not exceed 96-8 degrees, so for the sake of £50 get the water sensors replaced, then if you still see these temperatures you know you have another problem. Sounds like an airlock if you are not loosing coolant...good luck buddy these kind of problems are so frustrating I know furious

May not be relevant but mine started doing this, or similar, the other day and I took it to TVR Centre and they they said it was a lose earth. Apparently there are 4 and one was lose. It was fixed in moments.

where are the earths located? id like to check mine as i wouldnt be surprised if all 4 were loose on my car.

I can only strongly concur with what others are saying. Get it checked over properly (would definitely recommend a pressure test).

I do not mean to sound over-drastic but coolant issues, that were allowed to go unchecked, potentially caused the head on my S6 to warp, which when fixed, still went porous after a while, leading to further engine-related issues .....

I appreciate that is a drastic outcome - however the moral here is to get it tested at a small cost to avoid any potential issues that could arise from allowing this to become more sinister......

Hi Hollow,

I'm afraid I don't have the first clue. Sorry.

Get it looked at! I was told not to worry when my car was doing similar (it was steaming occasionally as well), I was told basically to ignore errors unless they persist after a reset, not to worry as all is fine etc. etc. The engine ended up massively over heating and melting. Cost me a new engine! The trouble is when you learn to ignore errors etc. you end up missing real errors, you then get blamed for ignoring them.... you can't win!

My initial problem was one fan being seized so was unable to cool the engine adequately at Le Mans a few years back when it was stupidly hot! The fan was fixed and then I was told the car was fine. It died on my next long journey (just after getting off the ferry in France!) with the same symptoms initially. I believe the problem may have been my radiator after reading some posts here! TVR Power ended up rebuilding / replacing my engine and fitted a new radiator due to a leak. I've now had the cooling mod carried out on the car as well as the new engine, radiator, gearbox and clutch so I hope it is fine now!
