Digital Cameras

I fancy spending around £160 on a digi cam. At the minute Im just using my phone for photos, some of them are really good with it being a 3.2 megapixel but doesnt compare to a proper camera.
Can anyone recomend one a good one in my price range?
I know I dont have a great amount to spend but hopefully should get somethin decent for that.
Looked on Argos website and most around this amount are 7mp but there is 1 or 2 that are 10mp, will these be bad quality compared to the others??

I have always found Canon Digital Ixus to be very well made, and produce excellent results.

Doubtless someone will tell you Samsung etc are better, but I'll stick with Canon.

What do you want to take picgtures of? Do you need something realy small or is size irrelevant(ish)?

Dont just go for the number of pixels, 4-5mp is plenty for most people.

If you want/need to enlarge your pics massively (A3) then 10mp yes, if not then 7mp will be more than adequate and will have no less pic quality.

Well most of my pics tend to be of cars, either at shows or at meets.
So a good flash would be helpful. I mostly just put them straight onto PC

I love my IXUS, but have now bought another canon for zoom shots at car meets and for mountain stuff and closeups of nature from several feet away. It's a Powershot S2IS and it's bloody fantastic. 10x optical zoom plus image stabilisation means I get pin sharp action shots even at full zoom. Paid £135 secondhand on ebay for a 4 month old camera. Runs on 4 AA batteries which last really well too.

Ebay item 320089717043 looks even better. S3IS for £149. 35-440 lens so you get wide angle built in too.

Always liked Canon, I have an oldish Ixus which gives excellent results, anything with 4mp or above will be good enough.

Samsung Click - about £70 in Suerdrug (of all places)

Bought a couple for significant other and eldest dependant and cannot fault it.

I'm in a similar boat and at the moment the Fuji F30 or F31 are at the top of my list. Although this does seem to change often! Kodak have just announced a tempting sounding Z885 with an ISO up to 8000, which is pretty mental. No write ups yet tho.

And most probably a lie. The best dSLR's out there struggle at ISO 6400. Sometimes numbers just get spun so far by the marketing they cease to be usefull.

I have an S3IS which I got as a stop gap after my SLR stuff got pinched.

It's pretty good - has a great lens, and the IS makes the long zoom very usable even handheld. The only thing that annoys me slightly is that the image can be a bit noisey at the higher ISOs. For £150 it has a lot of features though.

Remember tho most small digicams dont do wide angle shots, usualy 35mm is the widest, with few doing 28mm.

I guess the noise at high ISO is the tradeoff for the complex lens. I still love it though, and have some amazing long distance shots brought closeup. I don't bother carrying binoculars on my backpacking trips anymore.
