Not sure if it the same in the 997, but this is where I got the info for mine. (996)

www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=2470&hl=relay

Works a treat and took 2 mins.

There's a small plug-in connector in the right hand side of the engine bay - just un-clip it, and 'hey presto'..... If you do it with the engine running in silent mode, you'll know you've got the right one.

Does this process ensure that your car makes the maximum noise all the time?

It would bother me that this noise would annoy people living nearby my house in rather the same way as if I played my hi fi really loud with the windows open early/late or ran a concert in the garden.

Have you considered this possibility?

Not quite Supermono - your right foot is what ensures how much noise your car makes. A car with PSE can still be relatively quite if driven on part throttle. However, I did use mine quite a bit when my Son was very young - very useful, esp. when farting around trying to reverse into the garage....

This maybe a stupid question but if I disconnect the plug-in connector, am I still able to use the 'manual quiet button' or is everything disconnected.

Ideally I would like to disconnect the 'quiet bit' between 2000 and 3000ish revs, but still have the quiet switch.

Thanks

Danny,

Here is all you need to know-follow the link below.

www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?

N.B. Just a thought for anyone doing the same. If you're very careful and scratch the epoxy out from underneath the capacitor, you can simply snip the connecting pin and bend it very slightly so it isn't making contact before wrapping a 5mm x 5mm piece of insulation tape just to prevent any accidental contact. If you take the time to do it this way, should you ever wish to backtrack your handy work, you can simply remove the tape, bend the capacitor back to make contact and touch the two together with a small blob of solder. Bob's your uncle

This (IMHO) is the best way. 1) It gets rid of the cut out. 2) You still have the switch working in case you want to go to stealth mode (scaring old people or being 'nice' through sleepy villages. 3) You can 'fix' the relay again if you want the cut-out feature back again (although you probaly wont!) as you haven't been too harsh with the wiring in the relay.

Is it the same for a 997 as a 996 modification?

I believe that they are different. You can disable the quiet period on the 997 by disconnecting the plug in the engine bay but this also kills the switch.

I think some people have fitted a second switch Which avoids disconnecting the plug.

I ran mine for a while with the plug disconnected but to be honest I prefer it with the quiet bit around 30mph - kept feeling like max power with people looking round to see me doing 30! Noise kicks back in at 50mph.

you called
the renn tech link will not work as you can only gain access as a member.

I have the 996 mod for the PSE. any one who wants it please PM me.

I dont have the mod details for the 997 but I suspect the process is exactly the same. Certainly worth a look at your relays to see if you can spot the one the tutorial refers to.

let me know if any of you want the details

sorry for being ignorant, but what is it about?

if it's about eliminating the switch, and keeping the engine at "loud" all the time regardless of the switch, what do you mean when you say "the switch still works"? Or is it that the default setting becomes loud instead of quiet?

Is 996 like 997?

the switch controls the baffles in the exhaust to make it loud or quiet. However, there is also an automatic cut out system so the PSE goes quiet between the speeds of 30 and 45mph to comply with EU drive my laws.

this cut out is managed by a relay above the fuse box. a signal is sent from the speedo which closes the baffles between the speeds mentioned.

by modifying the relay you can essentially over ride the speedo signal which means the sound doesnt cut out between 30 - 45mph

so you have a super loud exhaust when you want it. and when you want quiet mode you have the switch which can turn it off.

I think that's where the 996 & 997 differ - no relay on the 997

I think I read somewhere that on the 997 the 'quiet' zone is controlled by the EMS and I have not seen any mod to get round this.

I've recently fitted the switch although for the last two years I've ran a permanently noisy PSE! When fitting the switch you need to ensure that you don't connect the pink/grey wire up, this wire is connects to the speedo feed on the relay board, if you can remove this (it connects to pin A6 on back of the PSE relay) then you can properly choose on or off.

Yup - I believe this is the way Northway removed the cut-out on my 996 C4S. No changing the relay - just remove the wire.
