Has anyone tried importing a Yankee 993? I have been searching the UK since 2005 for a tiptronic and now must start a worldwide search before I get to old. Unless you just happen to be selling yours?

I'd look in Europe first - far, far simpler.

My manual 993 was a personal import from Germany.

Yep totally agree, stick with European stuff.
Not sure if Yankee variants are slightly down on BHP also due to emmisions regs.
Always used to be back in the 80's

I think output is the same - was made consistent from the late Carrera 3.2 onwards IIRC, but the standard ride height will be really high, lights are probably weird, type approval may be a challenge and who knows what else.

Bear in mind that you will pay 10% import duty on the purchase price, then vat on the purchase price, shipping cost and on the 10% import duty, so it works out to be quite a few quid.

Not to mention OBD2 on later cars, emissions changes in the heads. Ride height fixable easily, engine output not so easy ..

cheers, Maurice

If you mean Europe, there is no import duty or VAT to be paid as long as VAT has been paid at or since new.

I was on Rennlist recently discussing 993 pricing, when I told them how much I had recently paid for my UK 993C2S they thought I was completely bonkers. Prices are a lot lower in the USA, so even with taxes, import duty and shipping, it's still likely to work out cheaper than buying in Europe, so it comes down to whether you can live with LHD and the differences between ROW & US cars, it was this that put me off the idea of importing.

I brought my '97 TT with me when I moved to the UK in '05. Given it was "household goods" there were no punitive financial burdens placed on me. I was just forbidden to sell it for 12 or maybe 18 months. To get it OK'd here I had to install side repeaters, change the tail light assemblies and reaim the headlights. That was it. I brought it from California, so it had NO problems passing UK emissions tests. It had ROW springs already installed. The hp/tq numbers are identical to ROW cars. It has, what I think would considered a UK full spec interior - leather everywhere, except where there's carbon fiber. Yes it's an OBDII car, but that doesn't seems to give JZM any difficulties, whatsoever. It had a Porsche Motorsports 450 hp kit in it while in the States. JZM added a 5-bar fuel pressure regulator and had the ecu remapped by Olaf Manthey's guy. They also replaced the knackered suspension. Runs like stink.

Yes, OBD2 is not a problem in itself, it just allows more checks to be run on the emissions. Where legislation is tight that leads to problems passing tests .. here is a thread on the subject.

RoW 993s don't get the heads fitted with secondary air injection - these ports clog up and give check engine lights.

Another difference was that no US cars got the /21 closer gear set

cheers, Maurice
