Im looking at a car which is under OPC warranty but it only has a few days left to run so will be a few days over if I buy the car before I would get the chance to renew it in my name. Does anybody know what period (if any) of grace you get to renew it before the car requires re-inspection.

IIRC there's no grace period - check with them though.

cheers

I was given a grace period because I left it a little late to renew. seven days I was told.

You could renew in the current owner's name and then transfer it to you afterwards. Or transfer the current cover to you, then renew. Depends how the transaction's being done - when you're going to comit to the deal and likewise the owner. Should be do-able though.

Or ring the OPC in question and ask them for a small period of grace?

I was told 7 days & did in fact renew in that period. However, check first, they are all different!

I was told its 4 weeks before it runs out.
If there are less than 4 weeks left, then the car has to come back in for a reinspection.
Looking back now, that doesnt make sense as they have to fix faults under warranty even if its the last day.
Funny how we get different info !

It is 7 days. after that you will need to pass the 111 point check. The OPCs have no say over grace periods because the warranty is underwritten by someone else.

I spoke to Porsche Reading about this particular car, they said it needed renewing before the expiry date simple as that. In the end someone offered £500 more than me for that particular car and didnt care about renewing the warranty. I wasnt prepared to go over my top budget as I couldnt be sure it wouldnt cost me more than just the £895 to get it back into warranty as the sale date would be the same as that of the renewal deadline. When you have not lived with the car you never know what the inspection could turn up and lead to a bill of £££ which after buying the car I wouldnt want to lay out. Bit different if you have owned the car for a while as you have a better idea as to the cars condition.

I bought a different car in the end, its got a few more miles, is six months older and its warranty has expired some months ago, although has a better spec. I struck a deal with the owner which includes him getting the car serviced, inspected, correcting any faults and putting a years OPC warranty on the car. Knowing its being inspected and everything corrected also meant I didnt have to look so hard when I viewed the car, just a HPI check and a general lookover.

Getting the car booked in with OPC has been the big problem, the guy who owns the car has had to put in some effort to sort that. It looks like im going to have to wait at least a few weeks before we can get it into an OPC. The owner has tried Nottingham, Sheffield, Sutton Coldfied and Cambridge. Best we can get is Sheffield on the 3rd April unless Cambridge call back with something better. Its well worth the wait though as I get a freshly serviced car, I know all faults are corrected right before I buy and a years OPC warranty. Its the best situation for a nervous first time Porsche owner to be in, I can then decide next year if I want to continue the waranty or if I feel confident enough in the car to wing it although to be honest will probably continue for resale purposes.
