Discussion
I am looking for a good deal on a Rotax Max, ideally with a trolley, spare parts etc etc, however I am looking around the £1200 mark.
I am also looking around for any places where I can rent a kart, but I am pretty sure thats am impossiblity!
Remember, like he said, 'I'm new!'
I appreciate any advice you can offer me.
Thanks.
PS: Lesson one, its 'Karting' got it

^^^^ Ooooops
Rotax is great fun although very physical (may have got better) when I was racing 18mnths ago due to uni commitments I had to sell up. You do need to factor in nose cones, rad's and side pods as these were "used" fairly regularly! Another thing to remember is that the tyres will only last one meeting and they are 100 quid a pop!
Are you intending on racing or is it just for fun? Do you want to progress or just do the odd club event?

But if you aren't interested in racing, it's much cheaper than Trackdays in a car.
£30-£50 track fee at a test day
Tyres - nearly news either bought of ebay for £20 a set at most, or free from race teams if you ask nicely at the end of a race meet.
And tyres last a lot longer if you aren't worried about being the fastest so use them for more than 30 laps.

Agree totally infact if your not interested in racing then buy the maxxis used in the TKM classes as these are a much harder compound grip level isnt as good (I used to run on these when running the engine in) but i managed to get within half a second of my normal laptime after getting plenty of heat in (they probabaly wouldnt heat up enough in a normal sprint race.)
I found the Rotax very tempremental although have heard the later engine revisions were alot better just worth thinking about plus the seals on the chamber are worth keeping for resale purposes. Engine rebuilds should last 50 hours but I personally did it before 25hrs. If you mechanical and can do an engine rebuild (every 4hrs running) then the 100cc TKM is probably your best bet for just messing around in as it is far more simple (reliable!) although you do need to bump start them.

Firstly I want to just test and enjoy myself! Definitely interested in club level stuff, eventually sort out a licence and just take it from there really!
I am not entirely sure myself and thats why I want as much advice as possible. I know I love karting (all be it at commericial bumper kart level) I am quite into road rallys but I just want more and several ppl have recommended karting, rotax max in particular as its clutched!

If you want to give proper competitive karting a go to see how you fare, but don't want to shell out on a kart, have the hassle of maintaining and transporting it etc. (i.e like me
) one way is www.club100.co.uk
Basically it's arrive and drive sprint or endurance racing in lightweight 100cc 2 stroke karts (not the big heavy tractor type things) at various circuits around the south and midlands. I've done a couple of practice days and one race day so far this year (have another race this Sunday
), there's a good club atmosphere and it's all fairly fast paced, proved by the fact I'm languishing somewhat down the finishing order, all good fun though!

Can't reccomend it enough, I raced for 9 years from cadets through to national championships in Snr TKM, best years of my life!!
Just remember, as with all motorsport it generally ends up costing a whole lot more than you think it will!!
All well and good saying you just want to test etc, but as soon as the bug bites you'll be thinking about having a go at a few club races and before you know it.......!
Just have a look when theres a meeting on at your local club, go down and have a look round, and get chatting to a few people (generally everyone is dead freindly, especially at club events). Theres always loads of bits swapping hands as people swap equipment so you should be able to find a bargain somewhere!!
P.s. where are you based by the way?
Si.

Club100 looks good, the test day on 15 april looks like a chance to have a go too!
Anyone else with Club 100 advice/expertise?

Just go down and have go, if you've not been in a 2 stroke machine around others who have it'll be an eye-opening experience!!!
Good Luck!
Seconded - just try a proper 2 stroke direct drive kart before spending out on your own.
I went to Rye House last October for an hour in a Club100 kart to get a feel for what they're like. Not the quickest things in the world acceleration wise, but so much more nimble and responsive compared to a corporate kart. And when you're in the middle of a pack of 20 or so, engines all buzzing away, heading up to a greasy left-right sweeper wondering if/when to brake and looking out for others who've lost it, they're more than rapid enough to begin with for a novice, believe me!!...
Another thing a few people mentioned to me was don't underestimate the time and cost (and frustration!!) that running, racing and maintaining your own kart involves. With Club100 they come all ready prepared to a high standard, then you can hand them back at the end of the day, drive home and look forward to your next race without all the additional hassles. It's brilliant fun and good value for money too for 'proper' racing.
I'm racing at Shennington in the Sprint Heavyweights on the 1st April in the afternoon, let us know if you're going to give it a go.
(I must be getting old - that's 2 threads I've mentioned 'good value for money' in today)
