Reading the manual of my 30,000 mile C2, it says that the engine oil pressure gauge should be approx 3.5bar @ 5,000 revs once fully warmed up. Mine is way above that!

Mine reads 3.5bar @ circa 2,000 revs, and the maximum 5bar at 5,000 revs, yet there is no warning light and the car appears to be running perfectly. No performance decrease, no smoke, and runs smoothly.

Is this reading normal?

Are you checking this when properly hot or when cold? They all peg at 5 or thereabouts when cold. At hot idle you should see about 1.5 on the scale.

yes. It varies from car to car. I'm not even particularly sure the guages are that accurate. If you have a reading above 1 bar idel, and above 3 bar at 5000 rpm, don't worry.

Err, just saw you said when hot. I would say no that doesn't sound normal, when hot it's closely tied to engine revs. It could be a sticking pressure relief valve when was the last service/oil change?

I may pop into my local OPC. Anybody have any experience of the OPC in Chester?

Firstly I wouldn't worry about it too much, it could be a gauge issue as someone else said but good idea to check it out as it doesn't sound spot on normal per the manual.

My 996 has this stupid problem with the fuel gauge where with under 70 miles to go, pretty much 50% of the time, it will tell me I've run out of petrol (even after refilling it) until I've locked the car and left it over night. I did manage to scam a free tank of petrol out of Tesco's the first time it happened tho. "This is a Porsche, it's GERMAN, there can't be anything wrong with the fuel gauge!" LOL

I guess they all have their little personalities!

perfectly normal fella.
my 993 runs exactly the same and checked it out so assume will be the same for 996.

Thanks for your help guys

I think I may have it tested by an OPC anyway just to be safe. That's what the warranty is for afterall, isn't it?

Hi Andy

That sounds like you have a GOOD one !

could just be a problem with the gauge sender unit they have a few problems from time to time.

when the gauge reads 0 BAR oil pressure and warning lights come on then worry about it...worst that can happen it develops an oil leak from too much pressure....dont worry they leak anyway even with 1 Bar oil pressure.

I run a porsche repair garage and i would leave that alone.

Thanks

Mike

The fuel gauge that doesn't work is a known issue on C4 911s. You have to fill the tank to the very top, then lock and unlock the car. This then resets the fuel gauge again to read full. Weird...

Thanks again guys.

I may leave it for now, but I think it is something I would like rectified when the car goes in for service/other warranty work.
