Hi everyone,
I have the pleasure of now owning a 5.0 Chimeara, I have had it for a couple of weeks now, and cant remove the grin from my face! I have owned various modified Subaru's and Evo's over the last few years, and although probably quicker A to B nothing can compare to the noise and acceleration from that V8!!

The car has a couple of problems though( I bought it privately for a good price, and am expecting to spend a few quid to get it up to scratch) that I was looking for some advice on.
1. there is a fairly loud whine from the back end, I suspect this may be from the dif? I have it booked in to a specialist to get looked at next week, am hoping it may just be the wrong oil in the diff or something simple, but fear it may be a rebuild. How much would I be looking at roughly for a rebuild?

2. The temperature gauge works sporadically(Spellcheck) at best. It seems to read properly when it works, the fans cut in at just over 90 degrees etc, I cant see any loose connections at the sender. Where would I get a replacement sender from, assuming its not the gauge itself?

3. The mirrors work great if you want to adjust the passenger mirror up and down and expect nothing more from either mirror. Any ideas where to start?

Many thanks

I too am a newbie, but I may be able to help with the mirrors as I've been there, done that.

I had a dead nearside mirror and the offside only worked in out, not up down. The dead one was a broken wire in the mirror itself where it goes through the door. Pull off the speaker mesh, undo three/four screws to remove speaker. Put hand in hole and up towards mirror, then follow the wires down to a multiway connector and make sure contacts are clean.

If you need to get into the mirror, look at the gap between the lower edge of the glass and the housing - now look more carefully You will see a small black tab - push it sideways clockwise as far as it will go with a thin blade and the glass shoud come out (unless someone has alreday mullahed it). You can then see three screws in the housing which allow the mirror cover to come loose so that you can access screws from the rear for the motor assembly.

Once I'd fixed the broken wire, both worked in/out nut not up down. The up down problem was the relay in the drivers side door (mine is a pre-facelift model)- corroded contacts, all I had to do was clean it up and all was well.

Hope this helps

Do check your cooling system, don't take for granted that it's just the gauge even if it most probably is. Mine wasn't even nearing a hundred degrees when the car stranded me at the roadside in a pile of steam (and the reasulting headgasket failure plus rectifying what was originally wrong with the cooling system plus replacing the exhaust manifold gaskets taking three days'worth of labour, I've decided to take no chances and have the engine taken out and sent to Blighty for a rebuild...).

I had the same thermostat problem a couple of years ago and had a period of worry but was told that as long as the fans cut in when you would expect them to, not to panic until a new thermostat could be fitted. This was done and has been OK since.

Taking one step beyond Konrod's useful advice - the mirrors are rubbish anyway so all the adjustment you can do only results in a narrow angle of view.

Don't panic! Could be less costly than you imaging...I had the same loud whine and it turned out to be a wheel bearing. New wheel bearing kit was £49 plus labour...phew. Owen

Temperature gauge reading in winter is often sporadic. Check that the system is primed by opening the top on the swirl pot, it should be brim full. The expansion pot is too low so the cooling system struggles to self prime once air is present.

If the diff is shot it is normally cheaper to buy a guaranteed used unit from a specialist breaker

Thanks everyone for the info, will have a go at the mirrors when I get a chance. Have now had the diff looked at and looks like it is on the way out. Any recommendations for a specialist for a rebuild?
