Real or replica test
Discussion
I put this on General Gassing also......
So you call yourselves car nuts?!?!??!
To truly test this claim out I have posted a few pics of cars, are they real or are they replicas?- You have to tell the difference some are very obvious while others are not;
(A)Is this Ferrari F355 real or is it a replica?
(B)Is this a real 308?
(C)A real f355?
(D)A real Modena?
(E)A real 365 GTB Daytona?
(F)A real E-Type?
(G)A real Diablo?

I thought they were all FAKES. However much they look like the real thing; unless they have replicated the construction in every detail, they are fakes. Something designed to deceive, desired by wannabees and reviled by purists.
I do agree that they have a place and a market, but they are fakes not replicas.

100% in agreement, especially the Ferrari Kits, it isn't a Ferrari it's a big fat fake, like them who own them.

Quite correct and brilliantly put. However I would venture to say that if they weren't made by the craftsmen employed by the factory to make them then they are fakes as well.
In most cases kit replica's are very close dimensionally to the 'real' thing and in some cases they are better put together. Yep I know the engines & interiors of some of the cars mentioned will never be the same as the original.
I agree a 'purist' will never like them, but when you'll never be able to afford the real one, why not have a car that looks like the one you've always dreamed of?
I recall reading in a mainstream magazine about a Diablo replica that was actually praised by the owner of Lambo as looking authentic and being put together better than many of the factory built cars.
Nor is there a mention of any Cobra, GT40 or P4.
There is a place in the market for replica's. Purists will always hate them, but if it is what you want, then who cares?
How many 'purists' will drive their Ferrari every day?
How many 'average' drivers can afford a £2k service?
How many 'Joe public' can tell the difference?
Apart from the 'purist', how many care if it is real or replica?
Is this an issue that purist's have because the average punter can't tell the difference, yet they have spent 4 time (plus) more on there car?

I was out at an independent Lambo/Ferrari service/sales centre with work and talking to the chief technician . Asking him what car he would own, his retort was most interesting: a Replica Countach, all the exoticism without any of the eccentricities. This was while he was taking one apart, removing the heads and lots of other parts due to a hole in a rad. The makeup of the bill would be 10% parts 90% labour.
His comment was he would never have an original of either breed and that was through choice.

strange how knowone has mentioned the reasons why they thought they are replicas, just reasons justifying why they despise these cars...........
first one (ferrari something) stance wrong
355 - windscreen and wheels
diablo - stance (looks too light)
otherwise they look kinda genuine

my first thought as well. Probably in part due to the fact most of them couldn't tell the difference, and that in itself winds them up even more.
Nothing in kit cars has given me greater pleasure than listening to a replica hater spout off about how crap and wrong a "fake" was for about 10 minutes before he was informed it was a real one, or in another instance where someone was discussing just how badly proportioned a replica Diablo was, just before finding out it was moulded from an original, and so accurate and beautifully done that diablo owners were buying the panels to repair their originals...

Good point. Here is another one that I made:
www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=23&t=368582&p=1
I think there will always be a place for replicas, in some cases its an upgrade of the original....... some of the GT40's replicas built now are awsome tools. Like everything I thinks its wrong to lump replicas all in the same basket.
Strangly out of the list above I thought the 308 looked pretty straight, maybe a bit to tall and the tailpipes dont look quite right for some reason but other than that.

As I said, there is a market for the fakes, and I didn't say they were badly built, or that they didn't look like the real thing.
However the fact remains that they are purporting to be something that they aren't.
What's the difference between these cars and a fake Rolex, fake designer labels, fake tan or wearing a wig?

The biggest difference is that someone, somewhere has spent literally hundreds of hours hand crafting their own car, to their exact requirements. They haven't gone and bought a shifty bit of merchandise off some bloke who pulled it out of a long overcoat.
They are built by people who have an overwhelming love of a vehicle, but for whatever reason cannot afford, do not want, or simply cannot get hold of due to rarity, the original. In the case of some REPLICA's they surpass the original. Frankly the chassis on a real diablo looks like it was put together by an apprentice welder who's just been let loose with a new toy, so it's not hard for a replica to duplicate aspects other than the external appearance!! (and that is coming from someone who's all consuming life plan is to do ANYTHING that results in owning said lambo...)
As a wise person once said to me - any idiot can hand over a large amount of cash to become the owner of something, very few can create that thing themselves.
This keeps coming up. IMO there is a big difference between a proper kit car and a bodykit. A kit car has it's own chassis and suspension. It all has to be built/piped/wired by the builder. The engine has to be installed. It has to go for and pass SVA which helps make sure it is safe for the road. If it is attempting to be a replica the general arrangement should be as per the original (no. of cylinders and engine orientation etc.).
Of course it can be difficult to tell a £20K+ bodykit job from the original at a distance. I am a kit car enthusiast/builder and a (budget end..) Ferrari owner and I just don't see the logic of spending £20k+ on a copy when the real one can be had for £30k. "Ah.. but they cost a load to service" is the reply - If someone has the undoubted time/skill to fit a body that looks as good as some of the ones posted here, then surely they can change a cambelt in a F355 themselves. "It will depreciate if I use it" - how much is a conversion that cost £25K worth when it gets traded in??
All my 2p of course, whatever is good for you.
