What is it with these diesel engines being the top contenders for LMP1? Surely the regs are massively in the favour and the R10 and new pug? They are sure to be the favourites for 2007.
I had a quick look through the regs and I think what they say is this:

Petrol normally aspirated max 6000cc
Petrol supercharged max 4000cc max boost 1500mbar
Diesel supercharged max 5500cc max boost 2940mbar

For some reason I really like the petrol engines and it looks like they have a disadvantage in the regs.

I don’t know what it is that I really like about the petrol engines, possibly the ribcage vibrating noise, possibly the harshness of the power delivery or maybe it is when you get a bit too close to them as they go past and they scare the cr*p out of you. Whatever it is they rock!

Sure, torque is what a race car really needs and the diesels have that in abundance but I really hope one of the moteurs essence can take it to the motuers diesel this year. Alas, I fear the odds are stacked against them.

I’d love to see a petrol 5.5 L turbo petrol engine at 2940 boost! That would really shut up those diesels, not that diesels are noisy, but you know what I mean. Bring back the 917!

But seriously, my hope is that the ACO balance up the regs a bit for next year. Fair play to Audi and Peugeot for working the regulations to the max but I want to hear scary roaring engines!!

What do you guys reckon?

Which is why Sebastian Loeb is not driving for Pescarolo this year. He says there's no point in trying as they can't win given the rules weighted in Audi's favour.

In my opinion I don't like the TDs. No drama, no noise, all forced induction which is wrong in my book. Part of the motorsport experience is the noise. Not interested in watching things that go whoosh personally. I'm looking forward to the JLOC Murcielago again!

Well, it may surprise you all to know that the first diesel car to race at Le Mans was in 1949! I'm afraid that diesel is the fuel of the future and that some of them are entertaining to drive, but the rules are seriously skewed in their favour. This week the road between Arnage and Mulsanne was closed for three hours so Audi could run up and down with their new R8 coupé doing a publicity film. All the ACO directors have free A8's or similar. Is it any wonder that the rules are - er biased?

I've seen videos of pug testing the 908 and it sounds like a regular v12 to me.

I wonder how long it is before Corvette develop a diesel V8.......I heard it's when hell freezes over! The ACO maybe should consider a change in reg's so that there's a diesel class to itself. The Penske P2 are so close to the P1 that maybe this distinction is no longer required, simply split it between fuel types.

Sounds good there, but I think the engine noise will get lost in the race.

We can hear the aerodynamic noises, and the tyres, and the gearbox. I think it'll still be discreet when passing Corvettes...

Have you seen the size of those A pillars though? Surely that must be a pain to drive with?

Sure those noises arent just the turbos? It doesnt sound like any V12 Ive ever heard, but the transmission is very whiny and the fact that on idle into the corner you can hear the tyres scrubbing, means Le Mans is going to be alot quieter in the future?

Great video. The new Peugeot looks awesome in action and it does sound OK, better than the Audi, but it is still too quiet and far too whooshy.

The diesels seem to accelerate out of corners with far less revs, I guess that is one reason they are a lot quieter. That torque really does seem to kick in way down low in the rev range.

Most tracks these days seem to have a max dB level, maybe they could introduce a minimum dB level to keeps the fans entertained

Not at Le Mans they won't be!

The ACO have dropped the restrictor size for LMP2 this year, to keep the gap between LMP1 and LMP2. The ALMS elected not to adopt this rule, to minimise the gap between LMP1 and LMP2. So while LMP2 can push for a win in the ALMS they won't be as competitive with the LMP1s at Le Mans.

Agreed, the Penske is the best chance of a petrol winner,(as long as they can keep the batery charged, lol). Pecarollo cant cut the mustard, even Loeb has seen the iceberg.
A split in fuel types would certainly be interesting

Yeap, diesel class and petrol class would be good imo. If they change the rules enough as things stand one will be more dominant than the other. Its not the way to do it, they should be separated.

If you wanted to see which was better why not have the same capacities/boost/weight for both and then one will surely be the true king!!
