simple air flow meter question

Does the AFM on my 350i needs to be installed horizontally?
Why I ask this, is because during the replacing of the old (nearly to disintegrate) air inlet hose, I found that the throttle and AFM connection are not in the same horizontal plane. And would need to angle the AFM a bit to have a smooth, logic fitting of the new samco inlet hose.
Will try to install AFM horizontal, but would like to know if angling it a bit would affect the flapper AFM operation/signal to ECU.
