Discussion
On the phone to the old man (hands free of course) driving along on Friday and he tells me that he still hasn't managed to fix my mums car and he might just buy a cheap estate for her to use in the meantime.
As he tells me this I drive past a Volvo 850 estate by the side of the road looking filthy dirty with a police aware sticker on it. So I duly stopped and had a peer through the window to see if it looked like it had been nicked (It was locked so probably not) although I could see the miileometer had 195k on the clock so possibly dumped.
On the Police Aware sticker there was a number to call so I duly did and spoke to a confused lass who seemed to work for a local council. I asked her if nobody claimed it what happened to it could I have it (don't ask don't get) did it go to a pound/auction. What about if I saved them the trouble of recovering it
This where it got a bit confused (see above) as she said the best thing to do it ring the number on the sticker and speak to them and seemed quite surprised when I said the them was in fact her.
She didn't seem to know what happened if nobody claims it, do any of the people on here know? If I wanted it (obviously if nobody has claimed it) how do I go about making her mine?
Thanking you muchly.

JUST TAKE IT
No dont, that is very poor advice, and very likely amounts to theft.
Chances are it is abandoned, but its not like you've found it, reported it to the Police, and then you can keep it after all due process.
The car may belong to someone, but we dont know any of the circumstances, leave it to the council and the Police, even if they dont appear to know what they're doing.
If you just take it, I can imagine that causing them to become very re-focused on the legitimate ownership of the car, as, regardless of how it came to be there, it's not yours to take.
Had a friend who had a vehicle stolen and abandoned. Someone found it, assumed it was abandoned, took it home and restored it.
So, now a court case over ownership.
The vehicle was reported stolen originally. Will have to call him and see what happened. But DON'T just take the car, if the owner sees you driving it in a couple of years, they can claim it back and cause you problems.

I had a similar issue with a caravan! I wanted a caravan that I could rip apart to make a trailer out of the chassis. Spoke to our local caravan service centre, and he said he had seen one that appeared abandoned by the side of the road. Being reluctant to just go and take it I spoke to the abandoned vehicle unit at our local Council. He said he had a report about it, and they were due to take it the following day, and whilst he couldn't tell me to take it, they wouldn't mind if it had gone before they turned up! I duly went to get it, only to find someone else got there first!
I suggest speaking to your local Council and findng out who they use as a contractor to recover abandoned cars. I think the procedure is they rcover the cars, and try to notify the owner, if they don't get anywhere the car is sold, presumably usually for scrap.
