She breathes.......again.

This time far quieter on tickover, much less mechanical noise, much less smoke. Odd. Convinced it's a different block too.

Gonna treat her to a gentle run in this time and nice fresh oil after a couple of hundred miles.

I was expecting the clutch to be a little sharper but, no nasty surpises yet. Only just rolled her back and fore a few times.

Whilst doing somes checks (and after reading a 'Heel and Toe' fred over on the Porker forum), I noticed that the loud pedal was hitting the ali bracket with about 1/6 travel still to go on the throttle spindle. Oh sh1te!! It scares me enough already! But still moved the floor throttle pedal stop down a few turns and took up the slack in the cable. Now full opening coincides with the rear pedal stop.

Thing is this has bought the throttle pedal forward. It now is level with the brake. When the brake is applied I'm wondering if I'm gunna be hitting the accelerator, even before I might want to for a H&T blip.

Where do others who H&T have their pedals sat?

Anyway - pleased as punch, next weekend for road trial and checks.

I think if you do a search on this forum you will find the answer. I remember asking the same a couple of years back. I ended up having to change the linkage point on the carb in order to get full travel without having to much movement at the throttle pedal end. Having short legs made it difficult to hit wide open throttle quickly without the feeling of needing to shift forward in the seat.

You're a baaaaad man Mr D. tempting me like that. You know I'll be crawling around at 3000rpm stopping every 15min to stick my head under the bonnet!!

I fink I'll be ready to play the weekend after.

Well make your own way down to Hayling (at 3000rpm or thereabouts) and meet for a chat.

So here's a new one.

When I unpacked the engine I noticed a few drops of oil under the dizzy cap sprung retaining clips. Whiped them off but thought nothing more of it.

Just been out to her and again, this time after she ran for about 5 mins on the weekend, the dizzy was dribbling clean oil. Removing the cap I found this:

Squeeze my ignorance, but this ain't supposed to be wet, no??

Ideas??

Going to bed now - but perhaps the technical fairies might leave a little deposit for me to examine t'int morn.

Night-night.

Have you got your PCV valve connected?
I seem to be playing the same record over and over but the bottom line is all performance engines have blow-by and the SBC it would seem even more so. If you don't release that pressure, and even help reduce it, then it will force oil out of any available gap. The dizzy drive shaft is one of those gaps.

Now tell me you have a PCV valve connected and shoot this whole ramble down in flames.

Steve, apart from the interior, mine is a std build, so I have what the build manual says. I have rocker cover breathers but no PCV valve. I'll check with Gail whay this has happened.

Cheers

I'm with Steve on this Pete. Looks like you need to release some pressure in that thar engine.

Glad it's back up and running

So, after calls to Factory and AS, I think I know the problem. The engine was turmed on it's head with the dizzy in and some oil still inside. This has gone into the dizzy and has been sat there til the rotor started to spin on ot again. All cleaned up now and static checks complete. Come on the weekend!!

Glad you got that sorted. At least it won't rust in there now...

I have a really rusty dizzy for some reason. It took me quite a long time to get my engine in the car after AS sent it over. Despite and air conditioned garage when I took the cap of to check things over before firing there was lots of rust on the inside on all the rotors. I wonder if it was due to condensation gathering in the cap during the hop over the pond. There wasn't a drop of rust anywhere else not even inside the cylinders.

Gives me an excuse to replace the antiquated thing with a trigger wheel and coil packs at some point in the not too distant...

They are prone to rust. After 6,000 miles, mine looked like it had been left outside in the rain for a year...and I keep the car in a dehumidified garage!

I think it's to do with the ozone, or whatever it is, that's created from the sparking. Highly corrosive stuff

70 miles up on the clock now. All going well.

No leaks, no knocks or rattles, bushes blissfully quiet.

Difficult to evaluate the changes in such a limited run today but here is what I know so far:

1. Engine - no changes, but rebuilt. Just sounds smoother and far less mechanical.

2. Gearing - new 4th and 5th. The box is transformed and now the 5th is only used at speed on the motorway. Worries that I might jump too far in one change are unfounded. I just can't wait for a VMAX!! I now get 2500rpm at 75mph.

3. ATB Diff. Interesting. Can now drift out of a standing turn holding it perfectly. What use that is I don't know. I need a seriously open space to explore this safely.

4. Clutch. Slight judder taking off in first - ok at speed. Hope this is just a 'bedding in' issue. Not sure.

So - Steve. I'll see you at 'doggers paradise' tomorrow morning at 7am yeah?

Hi Pete
3 Ultima out on the run tomorrow. Can't help thinking the roads are going to be a little tight but never mind.
Don't forget to reset your clocks tonight. My problem is I think both my alarm clock and my mobile phone (alternative alarm) both automatically adjust for summertime so may be 2 hours out.

Engine good, diff good, gearing perfect (bring on a VMAX) just the clutch that a) hasn't bedded in yet, or, b) is more suited to a race focused car?? Just causing me a few worries around town or low speed manouvers.

Changed the oil after 250 (happy Keith?) looked very dark and a bit smelly so I've booked a day with Charles Dunn. See what that does.

How was your car?
