Just heard the chancellors plans on doubling the road tax for 4x4 gas guzzling cars?? Anyone know or can even guess what if any sports cars may fall into this category? Gallardo & Conti GT also fall into 4x4 gass guzzling cars??

mate - my 996 C2 falls into the 'Gas Guzzling' category.

Hell, a 2.5 V6 Mondeo falls into that category.

Infact, any petrol over 1.8 does...

But that would be really far reaching and hurt most motorists who have modest (read shite!) cars. He needs to be careful or else people might think it's nothing but a colossal tax take on the back of some shaky "science" behind global warming.

So all 911 drivers are going to paying £400+ a year road tax from next month?

It just makes the cost per mile rise.
The way to get that down is to drive the car more.
Something I plan to do this year

what?

just a tax to pay for all the problems he's created in this country? surely not?

using a politically charged green issue to cover this fact? no way!

The suggested 'increase' also only equates to about a week's depreciation on many luxury cars eek

but I thought 'gas guzzling' cars pay more because they are 'gas guzzling' and therefore pay more tax via the fuel they 'guzzle'?

Oh, well, looks like 6 months tax per year only now for the winter and keep the car on the continent for the summer using SORN.

Mind you, 95% of my mileage isn't in the UK so greedy fat pig Brown ain't getting much tax off me anyway

Rant Mode ON

I know you cant swear on this forum but what a complete bastard!!!!!

Do they really think the Chelsea tractor brigade etc will give a rats. They all have more money than sense anyway so they wont notice an increase.

For us, relatively low mileage per year, owners of sports cars which are basically classic cars and a hobby, we get stuffed!!!!!

As someone said above, put road tax on the fuel. That way the more you use a gas guzzling car…the more you pay towards road works etc. Plus:-

The less miles per gallon your cars does - The more tax you pay.
The more miles you do per year - The more tax you pay

Surely fuel tax makes more sense than a single hit or that stupid idea on toll roads / tagging cars to see which roads you use and getting billed. It will just send people into the countryside / back road to avoid paying thus leaving the roads clearer for the rich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! + more roadwork’s needed on the country / back road due to over use of old road surfaces

Again - Bastards!!!!!!

Anyone know what exactly the defintion is ?

Is it only for the newer cars with published CO2 figures or does it cover older ones too ?

Classics exempt ?

we wont know until wednesday.

Its likely to be based around the latest 'scale' of CO2 emissions - the group G cars. And knowing Brown, it will effect as many cars as it can, but i think anything pre-2002 should be okay with the 175 quid duty.

Fuel tax makes sense to greenies as it makes everyone think whether their journey is really necessary.

Car tax makes sense to greenies as it makes people think whether the car they are buying is really necessary.

How many people in this country buy a car that is in group G? How many of those care whether car tax is £200 or £400 or £800.

Push up fuel duty and the govt would have mass protests on their hands as everyone would be affected. Push up car tax on band G cars and only the rich elite will be affected AND the greenies will be kept happy.

Not a difficult decision for Brown is it?

you're right. It also keeps the out of tune bangers on the road that are in groups below G which spew out tons of toxic and noxious filth. Nice one Brown.

Still, next general election it's bye bye anti-environment, pro-tax labour

FOE (Friends of Earth) have been campaigning for £2000 tax on Band G cars (which includes cars like Jag XJ6 2.0 and Renault Espace).

Its quite right that a lot of cars that have anything bigger than a 2.0 litre petrol engine or a 2.5 diesel engine could fall into the emissions super tax. Some of these cars are hardly Chelsea Tractors or gas guzzlers.
But to the majority of people who own top marque type vehicles, it isn`t going to have an affect. He`s just digging his own grave by alienating performance car owners further... surely by now he has seen enough people leave the UK and take their hard earned with them? Now he wants to tax those who have stayed and bought expensive toys even more ... oh dear ... nono Why not put Stamp Duty up to 5% as well ! .... oops ... he may be doing that also ... Why exactly is Britain GREAT again? rolleyes
