Early diesel Freelander - reasonable hack?

A friend is considering an early Freelander as a reasonably inexpensive hack - definitely a diesel as he's heard of the HGF issues with the K-series version and has been scared off...

Any advice on things to look for/values for a tidy early diesel model? Irritatingly non-specific query I know, but any advice welcomed.
