How many will follow in dad's footsteps?

When Nico Rosberg took his Williams-Toyota to seventh place and two championship points at last weekend’s Australian Grand Prix, he highlighted the current wave of racing dynasties within racing. It seems only a matter of time too, before Nelson Piquet Jnr takes the step up to the premier category.

Back in Britain, this week Freddie Hunt – son of the late 1976 F1 champion James Hunt – unveiled his plans to race in the British Formula Ford championship this season. While in British F3, both Greg and Leo Mansell will line up on the grid at Oulton Park on Easter Monday, 9 April. With a famous name comes an easier access to media coverage and sponsors, but perhaps, a greater amount of pressure too.

So far in the PH bunker, we’ve managed to come up with 14 F1 drivers whose offspring have taken up motor racing. How many can you think of?

Alberto Ascari son of Antonio - GP racer from the 1920's although not called F1 back then.

Good work. I had Ascari, Ickx and Stuck on my list too. I'm sure Jo Siffert's son was or is racing - does anyone know anything about that?

The way this is going you have to wonder if in a few years time the formulas are swamped with racing dynasties and even the merely well-off are priced out of competition? It's certainly taken off recently, probably because it's so much safer these days that drivers are happy to allow their offspring to compete.

Or perhaps the drivers are living long enough to actually have offspring.....

It's been much more of a tradition in the US. Think of the Unser, Allison, Earnhardt, and Andretti offspring who have all raced in their dads' (and even grandads') footsteps.

Fangio's nephew (JM Fangio II) also raced in Indycars.

Then there's Michael Bleekomolen, Dutchman who raced F1 occaisionally in the 70's. His son Jeroen races now.

My Goodness. Have you ever seen a Son have such a strong resemblance to his Father as Greg Mansell? Even without knowing the last name, its obvious by looking that he is a Mansell.

29 - Emilio de Villota (occaisional F1 in late '70's & early '80's) His son, also called Emilio, & daughter Maria race. Emilio jr was in F3000 last year & Maria was in the Maranello Ferrari Challenge. Also his nephew Pablo raced breifly some time ago.
30 - Manfred Winklehock. His son Markus races now.

That makes 30 I think.
