The 280 (1986) has recently developed a "creak" from offside rear hub/ Wheel bearing. I have trailing arm suspension. Put it on axle stands just now and even rotating the wheel by hand gives the sound. On the road it gets much louder especially at low speed.

It's not the brakes binding and happens in neutral too.

Having never done a wheel bearing before I'm only guessing that's what it is. Am I right, and if so how much sh*t am I in, and should I be changing both at the same time?

Does anyone know what they're off and where one gets them? Looking at Steve's Bible will definitely be getting professionals to fit them.

Not the UJ's? Nicer option to the hub bearing

Yeah I know....the photo in Steve's book say's it all.

It's possible, but if I put my hand on the hub housing the creak, a sort of sticking/too tight kind off sound, can actually be felt. BTW car's done around 70k miles.

Either way, can I cause more damage by driving it to my mechanic, 25 Kms away?

they are a bit of a pain to replace (ive only done the 350 A frame type which are ford granada mk 2 , SKF part no. VKBA624) main prob is the hub nut at some thing like 220 ft/lbs torque, if you get a garage to do it thats not a TVR specialist make sure they know this, i usually leave my copy of the bible on the front seat and tell them to read the relevant bit first. good luck

Thought I was onto the same with mine once but jacked the hub up to mimic normal running and it was the UJ. The dry bearing was transmiting the feel of it through the hub. Also when the trailing arm is down the UJ's knock whilst rotating the shaft.

If it is the wheel bearing and it does sound like it, you will need a hydraulic press to get the bearings out. I have a set in the garage which are shot peaned internally by the ball race.

It is also importent to make sure the hub nut is done to the right torque and loctited. I have pinned mine.

Embarassing noise from the rear - Chicken Jalfrezi after burn per chance? - Seriously. I had similar situation on my last 400. Changed the wheel bearings (using a press) but not solved fully so did the outer UJ's as well which solved it. About 4 hours labour all up and about £200 of parts. The hub nuts are pinned.

Lamb Vindaloo actually but what are you gonna do?

Thanks for the replies. Has anyone got part numbers for the hub bearing and UJ (wishful thinking) as I'll have to hunt them down as I do with everything else.

Should have bought a TR6 ....

From the TVR tasmin parts list I have the bearing has 025R024A (02RO25A for the seal)for it (wether thats any use or not). Better off calling Wedge/RT?

As for the UJ, I took mine to the shop and made sure I had the correct ones first time around. (after I bought 4 that were listed as suitable for mine from a factors but they don't fit)

Don't bait me Tony, I can't resist.
The only bit of the running gear TVR designed themselves - and its the bit that gives the most trouble!

I agree that it is more likely to be a UJ - bearings groan continually in my experience, but UJs usually start sqeaking/clicking. I have also change a rear beaing withou a press (pre A frame)

Jeff, where/how does one acquire a Tasmin parts list??? Sounds like a very useful beastie.. I'm in Australia so I guess it's international phone call time again....

Any one have Wedge/RT's phone number/website address?

I got it from the club years ago. Dunno if it is still available. Also it is only for the V6 versions but some parts are the same.

As for Wedge, try here

Toby, assuming you have the smaller (standard on 200/280/350) drive shafts then the Hardy Spicer part number for the UJ's is HS166. You can get them from RT(0114 2817507), Moore racing ( 01908 368960) or GKN Driveline (UK No 0121 3131606).
The Bearing is from a MK2 Granada. The problem is the seals. On the Granada the front and rear seals are different, on the wedge both are the same. So if you source it as a full kit for a Granada you will require an extra seal. I can't remember if it's the front or rear that's used. I know RT do a full kit for this.
I have replaced the bearings both with and without a press. It is easy to damage the bearing if not using a press.

Sorry Tony,
I should have said designed twice since the one they cribbed from Lotus wasn't up to the job.
Ford will charge you 3 times as much as your local bearing shop. An independant will charge you 6 times as much.
