I have my first track day (Novice PM day at Brands).

I intend to do a warm up lap, 5 laps of trying to drive and then 1 or 2 cool down laps.

I understand the cool down lap, staying off boost and leaving breaks alone.

What do you do for a warm up lap, I would have thought that as its my first time I will be a bit cautious and gradualy get faster?

You'll find that if you are on SO3's you are likely to be limited on track time, by the tyres as they go like cheese after a few laps. (if you get them hot)

You'll be loving it and then slowly the turn in and exits will start to feel slightly out of your control. Thats a good time to come in.

Enjoy!!

Greg, I've got the RE050's so It will be interesting to see how they perform.

Bondy - in this weather warm up laps are probably more important than cool downs! Use them to get some heat into your tyres and brakes and to learn the track, and then just build up speed slowly. Very easy to chuck the beast off the black stuff in this cold weather!
You'll love it.

If you have a look on the MSV website to see what the novice trackday entails
you will see that they insist on follow my leader to teach you the lines, brake points,
apex and exit points. All done very slowly at first gradually increasing speed as
ability and confidence are gained.

Martin,

The best advice I can give you is get an instructor (or somebody who know the circuit) to sit along side you for the first few sessions. Learn the right lines, build your speed each time (warming the tyres, brakes etc) get into the right habits first. Don't be intimidated by other cars and drivers, be progressive with steering and throttle (dont stab the right pedal.

Most of enjoy it, learn from it, bring the car home in one piece, and book another track day.

Cheers,
Ian.

Thats correct but then you come in and go on and off the track when you want for 3 hrs.

So every time I come in I need to let the car cool down again before I go out. So at this point I need to warm the car again (there will be no guiding me at this point).

Thanks

Dear Bondy,
My advice would be far simpler; wherever you start be gradual in your increments. All too often the problem is drivers starting out at "pace X" and after only a few laps thinking they can do "pace X++", but you can't and you come off and spoil it for everyone.
Do not worry if you seem to be the slowest guy in the fastest car. Just go out and slowly increase the pace bit by bit lap after lap. The most important thing is to be able to turn in the same performance lap after lap. There's no point in doing laps at 90% then going for one at 110% because the 110% lap will have you off and very possibly damage something. Go for 90%, 91% etc and you'll eventually be the fastest guy in the session by slotting in repeated reliable and sustained performance. Its far better to slowly and incrementaly build on your experience. Oh and by the way don't expect to be able to get there in one track day. Enjoy the car and accept before you go out that no matter how well you think you can drive somewhere there is someone who can do it better.
Regards
Paul C

Cool down lap is important for the turbos and bracek. You need to try and do a full lap (2 in warmer climates) of Brands (quite a short track) without touching the brakes and without using the turbos.

Simply coming off track and stopping the car is very bad for it and the heat actually builds up.

You need to get lots of fast moving air over the discs and pads and turbos to cool them off before shutting down.

1 lap will do if you've not been thrashing it for tool long.

The biggest thing to worry about is whats called WDS (wallet depletion syndrome). Its very likely to happen to you after you finish your day as you won't be able to resist booking another one up

After a cool-down lap, when you get back to the pits, pop the rear clam open to let the heat out.

Yeah I understand about the breaks and staying off boost. At the weekend I also added cooling to the breaks from the front intakes. I have also been warned not to use the handbreak when in the pits, so I have some blocks to chock the wheels.

I already have a good idea on lines but I know I'm deffo not a good driver. I love my car and in now way want to hurt it so I will be taking it easy.

My biggest concern is keeping an eye out for people who want to overtake. I have done a couple of training days, which we had a little track time (airfield) at the end and I was concentrating so much on what I was doing that I forgot to check for others.

I will have passengers with me during my session so I'm inlisting there help.

I've got my new camera mount fitted so I'l have front and rear footage for you all to see how not to do it.

I have also got two instructor sessions booked

Thanks Guys

Bondy

Wow, what a great afternoon.

The weather held out, nice and dry with lots of cold air for the car. No problems with the car and she stayed on the track.

Iteresting that a novice day had a few people that couldn't of been novices, cars on trailers stripped out interior with rollcages (still no match for the Noble in shite hands).

Had a couple of instructions and got a good report he said I drove smoothly and had good throttle control.

One point coming up to Druids (the instruct was trying to get me to brake later as I felt that I wasn't taking this corner fast enough) I went to change down under breaking and couldn't get it in gear, the car started to slide side ways and I maaged to get the gear in keep a bit of throttle and opened up the lock and caught what would have been a spin. I was well chuffed (those lessons are paying off), even better was that this is on film.

Thanks for your help and i will be doing this again.

Will post a link to a bit of footage when I sort it.

P.S daddysummo came along in his EVO (Tommy something or other limited edition). That thing flew, he has had all the breaks upgraded on it a jesus when he hit the breaks at paddock hill I thought my internals were going to rip through my chest. Awsome.

Paul the carmera mount was fine, no issues from the Brands marshals as they have to check it before you go on.
