Hi guys, I'm new to this forum after sitting on the TVR forum for a few years!!
but I've decided I want a 911 (after taking one out for a test drive).
I don't know enough about them - hence the post, but what I'm thinking is....

996 C4 (cause it has traction control standard)
2002 model (cause better/bigger engine???)
coupe (cause my company car allowance insists! and I prefer the look)
Aero kit?
Sat nav PS thing (cause I don't like the look without it!)

I'm hoping to find something for about 35K with 40Kish miles on it.

Questions:
Does this sound feasible - or will I only be able to buy a lemon for this money?
Should I revise my thoughts on the C4 (as oppossed to the C2?)
Is the aero kit just for looks? Will it put people/purists off when/if I come to sell it?
Are there any options I should be looking for especially?
Do you know of anyone that sources a car for you?
Are there any guides to buying a 996?

Anything else that might ease my transition into the Porsche world :-)

Cheers

Lol, just sold mine last week.. Based on your spec, you'll be finding ones from £30-£35k, C4s in your range

B*gger, that was a nice looking car you had!!! I've not tried the C2 - obviously I'd need to try it, but is there any reason for choosing a C2 over a C4 confused he says awaiting lots of remarks from C2 owners and risking alienating myself from half the forum

If anything a C2 has too much grip. Is there any reason for choosing a C4 over a C2 (apart from wanting a smaller boot and less steering feel)? confused

Yeah, I know, for the couple of days a year you northern monkeys have snow

I'm always amazed at these comments, is you view based on driving and comparing both, if so exactly where did you loose that steering feeling ?

Yes it is, drove several C4s. Found the steering slightly number than the C2 which felt lighter. Horses for courses.

My main criticism of my 996 was it was just too competent. Very rarely broke traction, even in greasy conditions.

I'm not anti 4WD, I own a 4WD sports car too.

One of the reasons I like the idea of the C4 is that I've just sold my TVR!! and whilst I will miss the "old girl" it will be quite nice to have a car that I can use when it rains, without puting me in a ditch

Isn't that exactly the moment when you DON'T want to have a C4 to properly enjoy the tail happy layout? hehe

I spent 10 months trying to get that fecking traction control light to come on, and then it was only with a serious amount of standing water.

Drove mine with a fellow PHer in a C2 in the wet over the French Alps. The car slid that bit earlier, but was still very neutral, there's certainly nothing to be scared of.

In the entire time I owned it I never once wished for more traction, but often wished for less. C2 has a phenomenal amount of grip and traction, wet or dry.

Sounds like your mind is made up, but do try one.

C2 not quite in the same league as TVR for 'ditch puting'......! I managed it in the latter, but only 'nearly' in a C2....
If you're really worried, get one with PSM. The C4 is a good car, but I got bored with my 4S for the reasons that 'Torchy' said......They're TOO competent.... All IMHO obviously....thumbup

My mind is definately not made up, after the TVR any control of traction would be a novelty
Hence my post, I genuinley am interested in opinions and what I should be looking for.
At the end of the day I'm looking to spend about 35K I could spend 40K if I thought it was worth it, but would my spec be the best for the money? Should I spend extra and get a newer car or lower mileage??

I'm actually starting to think maybe the C2 is a good option.

you get a great sense of gratitude knowing you have reached the epitaphy of porsche ownership having put a 911 through a hedge backwards.

It's great fun thanks Jamie.... It's a very 'un-serious' car - Feel's like I should be in fancy dress every time I take it out ! Doesn't feel like 370bhp tho' - Supercharger on the cards soon I think. How're things with you..... Anything 'new' on the horizon?

I'd like to add I drove a couple of C4's as well - I originally preffered the C4 because i thought the 4WD would be handy come winter (since its a company car for year-round use), but as Jamie metioned - there is a huge difference in how the cars drive.

You should really try both, and see which you prefer, I found the C4 had a twitchier front end, with much less feel for what the car was doing, so I ended up with a C2...

Which, i used all winter - including during the brief snow we had, with no real issues - if you want traction, keep an eye open for one with, they're not that rare, though, as with Jamie, I've very rarely had the light come on (once when pulling out to overtake, i changed down to second, booted it and threw it onto the other side of the road, a slight twitch, slight flash and that was it), even when pushing hard in heavy rain, on wet leaves etc...

But anyway, youve got a good budget, so have a look around and see which you prefer...

Glad to hear it, you'll be heading towards 500bhp then... Not driving much at the mo, my commute is under three miles, and the kids keep me busy at the weekends. Had enough of depreciation though, maybe a 964 RS next.
