Morning people,

I'm replacing the serpentine belt on my Chim at the weekend and i've been phoning round to get a new belt. After doing a search on here (and looking at me old belt) it would appear that the one to go for is 7-ribbed 1850 length. I've been ringing round various motor factors and I can only get hold of an 1855 one - question is, is that 5mm going to make any difference? One guy I spoke to mentioned that the 1850-1855 issue is a bit of a red herring as they are all likely to be about 1853-ish, is that true?

A side issue is the disparate pricing! 3 belts all the same varied from 28 quid to 15!!

PS, I know a dealer may be the better option but I have solid reasons for not using the one nearest me!

As always, any info appreciated.

Cheers

5mm is not going to be enough to worry about, the tensioner as loads of movement and can deal with a lot more movementwavey

I would say that 5mm over that length and around all those pulleys wouldn't be a problem. In fact, your old one has probably 'relaxed' a little over the years anyway.

Is ther any other details that I need when ordering a belt for mine apart from 7 ribbed 1850 length

Do you need to know the ribs size, width of the belt etc??????

In fact I shall give a little more inforamtion my car is a 97 chimaera 5.0L No PAS No AC

What are the details of the serpantine belt that I would need if anyone has all the details?

Hi Bunglist,

I think the belts are pretty generic - Mine was originally a Dayco 7PK 1850, 7 for the ribs, 1850 for the length. QH supposedly make a 'pattern' part with the part number QBR71850 (can you see a pattern emerging? ) but I couldn't get hold of one of them.

Mines a 97 400 with PAS, by the way. I don't think the engine size matters to the length but i expect the PAS does!

Edited to add: and no AC!!

For info, and the benefit of people searching on this at a later date!

I've just done the job, its really quite easy. Should take 15mins tops.

1855 length belt fits fine. Just take a long screwdriver or jack handle and place it between the tensioner pivot and the exhaust manifold (the tensioner is under the alternator), stick something on the manifold so you don't damage it. Then its just a case of levering the tensioner in slightly to pop the old belt off, then threading the new one back on. Most difficult bit is making sure the ribs in the belt stay on the grooves on the main pulley off the crank at the bottom. Really needs 3 hands, but its possible on your own.

I went out fully expecting it to be one of those jobs that turns into a nightmare but was back in before me tea was brewed!

For 15 quid its worth changing anyway, my old belt didn't look too bad but when it came off it was apparent it was actually much worse than it looked when on!

Hope that helps some people.

Cheers

Timley post, I bought a standard Range Rover part from Rimmer Bros, ERR4461, drive belt PAS no A/C, It allllllmost fits, too long. They only stock 2, the other one is PAS and A/C, which must be longer.

Any idea where I can get one or what the Rover part number is?

Thanks

I think the Bible states that the RangeRover belts won't fit. I'm not sure what the engine difference is.

Is yours the 450 in your profile? I should think the belt that I used would fit yours - see above for part numbers and what-have-you.

So, are there different 3 belt sizes?

1 Cars with PAS
2 Cars with PAS and Aircon
3 Cars with neither PAS nor Aircon

Or, does the idler wheel on non PAS cars mean that belts 1 & 3 would be the same length
and so there are in fact only 2 different sized belts

confused

Mark, thanks very much, can you tell me where to buy the belt?

And thanks also for your hints on changing the belt, I was trying to figure out how to loosen the tensioner, then read your description of just levering the it forward, piece of cake, I’d of had half the front end of the engine apart!

Yes there are two sizes... cars with air con 1850 ish. cars without which are around 1815 to 1830 although 1850 ones will fit. However, the tensioner is close to its limits with this belt and is also very close to the exhaust manifold.

Don't bother with RR belts as their part numbers mean nothing and there is no easy way of cross checking them. They are also typically twice the price of anywhere else. Simply quote 7 pk followed by the belt length.

Or any decent motorfactors should be able to match it given the info on the thread.

They won't fit Wedge, Tasmin, s series, M series as they didn't have serpentine belts...

The proper method to move the tensioner is to use a 15mm spanner on the bolt that secures it(its a left hand thread so wont undo)and turn clockwise to move, replace belt using this method
