Hi all
sorry guys but i have a starter issue.confused
symptoms: when i turn the key i hear the fuel pump prime, then turn the key to engage the starter and clunk, turn key back and clunk again (but not so loud!) if i keep doing it she will start, sometimes first go others after 7 or 8 goes (she has always started eventually) sometimes when the key is fully turned if i wiggle the key she will turn over!
I have checked all the ignition and even hot wired it when the ignition barrel is off and i get the same. I had the starter off to look at it but there isnt a lot to look at!
should i bite the bullet and get a new starter? or could it be anything else?
thanks in advance
Andy

I think there is a known ‘feature’ with starting hot engines where something like this happens. Do a search for hot start and you will find a few threads about this.

My 500 does this when hot or cold. Sometimes I turn the key and just get ‘click’. Turn the key again and it may engage the starter or it may just go ‘click’. Eventually, after a variable number of ‘clicks’ the starter will engage and turn the engine over. I’ve had the starter checked for wear (there was none) and the starter has been bench tested with 100% first time engagement. The current favourite (no pun intended) is that the connection to the starter solenoid simply does not have enough volts to fully engage the solenoid. This theory will be checked when it is in for a service next week so I can let you know how I get on.

A clunk rather than a clatter suggests to me that the wiring is OK (so not the hot start problem) and that your battery is also good. There could still be a problem with the heavy duty wiring so have a good look at that.

Otherwise it sounds like you've got a tired starter motor. It's a Land Rover part so shop around. I was quoted £60 secondhand, £125 Halfrauds, £600! Land Rover eek

It's easy to swap if you have a set of hex adaptors for your socket set.

Hi Guys
thanks for the advice.
i don't think it is a hot start problem as it seems worse when cold, infact once started then turned off it seems to start better!
someone at work thinks it may be the starter solenoid (not sure spilt right!) but i am not sure how to test or take apart the solenoid!
i think i may have to bite the bullet and get a new starter.
anyone used this guy?
