I have just taken my chimaera 500 in to get it looked at by my local indy specialist for the fist time since buying it a couple of weeks ago. Thankfully there was a lot of good things to report, but one bad bit. The diff is on its way out, and needs a rebuild. any recommendations on a place to get it done? Tvr power quoted me £800. With being up in Scotland I would also have to either courier my diff down to them and back and pay for fitting up here or drive down and stay over till it was done. If I was doing that anyway is there any independant LSD Gearbox specialists that might be cheaper??

I think I saw a rebuilt diff in the piston heads classifieds. Not sure if it the type you need but may be worth a look

What type of diff is it? Many of us swear by CTS ( www.gearboxman.co.uk/ ).

It may help if you enter some details about your car.

a brave man with some spanners could remove the diff and get it sent off to Bernie (as per Dave's post) then refit after a refurb, but not (in my experience) an easy job.

To pay someone to do an all-in job for £800 seems reasonable, in my opinion.

Car is a '96 Chimaera 500. I think it is fitted with the newer style diff with the cooling fins on the bottom. The £800 price from TVR was frr the rebuild only, would have to pay to get the diff removed in scotland, couriered to TVR power, couriered back and refitted on top of the £800 rebuild.

That's expensive then - mine was rebuilt by CTS (link above) and it came in at a couple of quid under £400 inc VAT.

Had to replace my diff about 6 months ago. It was sourced from Bell Hill garage for about £500 with 8,000 miles on it. May be worth considering if you don't want to wait for your diff to be rebuilt.
