Small business Corp Tax up
Discussion
It's the Stalinist way.
Large coporations are doing good, by supporting the masses. If we stick together in our communes, keep our places in our boxes, and nobody rocks the creaking boat, there is no reason why the bankers cannot continue to make the profits that allow us all to survive.
We don't need small business to be well off as a country. In fact sucessful small business fuels envy and destroys the incentive for the masses to stand en-block protecting the safety of the good ship Britain.
I dont think its right, but I'm pretty sure it's what gordo thinks.
I see the economy as being like the wing of an aircraft. You get the shape of the wing right, adjust the angle of attack, apply some thrust and you get lift. With Brown, well you you get the economics of a falling stool.
I wish he'd just sod off back to Scotland where they love him.

re: Graham and dilbert's posts...
Indeed - totally agree. Greedy Gordon has it in for small businesses and entrepeneurs - it's the politics of envy and also of control.
Also, lets not forget the hard lobbying that firms like EDS did that ultimately brought in IR35. They hate us and would like nothing better than to wipe out IT Contracting and mop us up as employees that they can charge out at contract / consultant rates but pay at employee rates.
Did anyone else notice Brown specifically mention "Self Employed people who incorporate to avoid tax" (sic) early on in his speech? I guess IR35 and Section 660a isn't enough - he's coming after us again.

I am currently speechless with rage. I feel personally attacked by this administration. I am the kind of person they love to hate and want to tax until I don't exist anymore.
It really is getting to be time to leave.

Do you think the SNP are going to make inroads on Labour in Scotland come the elections?
I'm afraid so. Although their 'Scotland in Surplus' document has some interesting things in it (they claim the 2005-06 tax take in Scotland was £50.5bn, tax spend in Scotland £49.1bn) I don't find them credible. Contrary to what many PH-ers believe, not everyone in Scotland is either an extra from Braveheart or an alcoholic tramp - most of us are living more or less the same lives and facing more or less the same challenges as the English, and presumably the Welsh and Northern Irish too.

Skadi - no change to tax rates on dividends. Increase in small business corp tax though, and explicit aknowledgement that Revenue intends to 'monitor' labour income taken as dividends. That can only mean changes in future.
Cheers andrewis. Having just got my business to the level where we can take dividends it would mean a pay cut for me if I have to pay full tax rate on my earnings.
I'm agreeing with Dilbert's Stalinist theory. We've had years of press releases telling us how much this government's doing for small business but I've yet to see any "help" or "advice" that doesn't cost me money. £12b on Business Link and RDAs. How much of that actually gets to SMEs?
Dear Mr. Brown
Are those rubber rings upon which haemorrhoid sufferers sit tax-deductable, please?
It's just that 10 years of budgetry anal shafting have left me a little delicate in the sphincter region and your latest is just one too many.

The small company CT rate will increase from the current 19% to 20% in 2007, 21% in 2008 and 22 in 2009.
Normal Capital Allowances for most plant and machinery is dropping from 25% per annum to 20%. However, the initial allowance of 50% remains. Remeber that Capital Allowances always even out at the time the asset is u;ltimately disposed of.
Regarding the "monitoring" of dividend payments - they've been "monitoring" this for years. So far, IR35 is the best they have come up with and they have only had marginal success with that.

Those of us in Scotland trying to run small businesses don't.
