So peugeot 207 diesel's tax reduces by the same amount, right, to make this tax neutral?

Or is there a nice little unforseen side effect of this Environmental measure for him in terms of making some more money...?

BBC website says £400 for top band from next year. One of the reasons I bought a 2000 model 996 which is pre-CO2 categories ...

Yes - 1st March 2001 is the key date. i.e. X-reg good, Y-reg bad.

This is a transcript:

Brown said:

So there are potential gains from enhancing this incentive. In addition to maintaining a zero rate for the lowest band, aligning petrol and diesel rates at the diesel rate, and raising the rates by £5 each year for the next three years, and for band F by 10 pounds this year, I propose an immediate 30 per cent cut in band B from a top rate of 50 pounds down to 35 pounds, to be matched by moving the top band 30 per cent higher to £300 and then again to £400 next year - measures that will taken together cut vehicle emissions since 1997 by two million tonnes.

Looks like Band G is £300 / £400 not F.

'to be matched' ... I hope he's not trying to kid us that he's even stevens in terms of income ...

BTW: Isn't a 911 band G ?

Here's the stupidity of it...

My 2002 Audi A6 2.7 Twin Turbo Quattro Auto petrol with 250bhp is in band F with 289 g/co2 = £190pa (last year)

My previous 2002 Audi A4 2.0 petrol Auto with 130bhp is also in band F with 192g/co2 = £190pa (last year)

My 1996 Porsche 993 C2 with 285bhp is not in any band and I paid £175 last year.

My reading of this is that porsches registerred on or before the 22nd march 06 will be treated as band "F". ie not the £300 and then £400 annual road tax he mentioned in his speech?

Thats correct! Not that i want to be put in band G, but does show the inefficiency of the bands?! I fall into the same band as a cooper S and less than some poor sod who is running a new 2 litre renault espace
